A friend of mine the wk of 3/22 wants me to tag along on a business conference for about three days at Dayton, OH. Got to thinking if I did go then for my daytime entertainment do some photo taking of NS & CSX trackside. I’m not much into photo shooting anymore but this part of country would be worth it. Are there any good worthwhile locations in the city to do this or just simply stay home on vac?
go down I-75 to Hamilton Ohio where Csx and Ns trains run. Better yet go to the Cincinnati museum center. It is an old train station. In the back is “tower A” with an overlook of the yards. Great shots can be had as trains come and go over the Ohio river. There are railroad bridges over the Miami river in Dayton and a yard in Moraine(just south of Dayton) but those are kind of hard to get to.(the following week is matt’s spring break if he doesn’t have to make up snowdays)
stay safe

Don’t know whether you are into public transit at all, but Dayton is one of the few North American cities where public transit is by “those rails in the sky”, a trolleybus network. You certainly ought to experience a least one ride. One might take you to a good viewing point for rail action too, and the drivers are known to be helpful.
Don’t forget the truly wonderful Air Force Museum! You don’t have to be an airplane enthusiast to deeply appreciate it. It is great.
Go here to check info and hours on Tower A at Cincinnati Union Station: http://www.cincymuseum.org/union-terminal/experience#tower-a I highly recommend it if you can get down there.
Sorry, can’t get the link active.

I hope this works for you. Tower A is a fascinating place (either one! but I’m talking about the one in Cincinnati this time).
About 20 miles north of Dayton in Troy there are two parks that are great for rail fanning then CSX Toledo sub. One is near where the abandoned NYC used to cross the Toledo sub and the other is on the northern end of town by the high school.
