Being an AT&SF modeller, I have four steam locos (2 x Kato Mikados, 2 x Spectrum Consolidations) in N scale that need to be converted from coal tenders to oil tenders. I am unable to find any ready-to-run replacements for these models. I am considering either scratchbuilding or kit building if I could find a suitable kit. My main consideration is in regards to the Mikados - they both have sound and DCC in the tender, and it only just fits in, meaning that any replacement shell would need to be at least as high as the top of the coal load.
Is anyone able to provide any advice on this, regarding a source of replacements or scratchbuilding tips? It would be very much appreciated.
I am looking for the same thing that you and will convert some of my coal tender to oil tenders.
I don’t have find any kit about it so far I have looked for. May be GHQ models but I am not sure.
So I beleive we need to scratchbuild it, starting from photos or if we can found some plans or summary about it. May be tak a look at the Kalmbach library of articles.
In fact it’s just a “cap” over the tender bunker; we could do it in styrene and put a few details to convince the modifications; these details are easy to find on some old tank car or old models of oil distributor.
In the site of this layout , there is an old Rivarossi/Atlas Pacific, which was converted to oil; there is no explanation but a few pictures which can help you. www.wmrwestenlines.net
Thanks for the referral… Here’s the complete article…
In a nutshell, the WM converted several of their 4-6-2 K-2 Pacifics to oil to pass muster under the City of Baltimore’s smoke ordinance, adopted in the late 1920’s or early 30’s. The oil fired engines operated in commuter service between Hillen Station downtown and Union Bridge. Occasionally one would wander as far as Hagerstown.
WM 202, which was one of the conversions, is preserved in the Municipal Park in Hagerstown.
