I have just removed the Shell from my three truck Bachmann Shay. I am trying to get rid of a high pitch Whine. The suggestions is to OIL the bearings on the Motor.
Is the bearing connected to the shaft on the side of the Motor that is connected to the wires?
Suggestion was to remove the Bearing Cap. Is this the washer looking thing on the shaft?
If it is, How do you remove it?
With the cab off should I grease all the gears? They are all covered with white grease now.
Your photo doesn’t show me what I would like to see, but the motor has a shaft that runs through or into something else on at least one end. If both ends are housed, then you should put a drop of suitable lube on each insertion. However, there is the end of the rotating shaft on the motor that enters a coupling, or perhaps into a gear tower/transmission? It would want a drop of lube at that insertion.
Otherwise, lube the wheel bearings and the driveshaft linkages and such at the side of the loco where the vertical cylinders are.
If the innards of the motor are shrieking, I am out of my depth.
@ hwolf. Seems like you have a very good camera with the close up shot. How about taking a couple ( maybe three? ) more close up shots of the motor at different angles showing as much of the bearings, shafts, etc.
Then maybe someone can help you a little more.
Also Crandell won’t be pulling his hair out. [:-^]
hwolf What I see in the latest photo is a worm gear ( brass ) to the right of the motor and that would need grease like this:
Best model RR grease on the market IMHO. [Y]
If gear already has grease on it you could wipe it off and apply with a fresh small amount, as your first post said there was grease but I don’t see any in pic.
Still don’t see the bearings with caps you were talking about but if needed then Labelle # 108 light oil will do the trick.
Try these. Don’t forget to tell me where the oil and grease go and how to remove the bearing cap if that is what is on the end of the Motor ( Wire Side)
Picture 3320 up higher on the tread is the best picture of the other end of the Motor. Is the large Gray disk in the center the Bearing Cover with the shaft in the center. If so, how do I remove this to oil the bearings? I will try to get a better picture at that end.
Pictures below are as good as I can get of the other side of the motor. Even though 3341 is blurry, you get a close up of the shaft and the ring around it.
There are small metal tabs that hold the ends on the motor. That might be what they are talking about. I would only go that far as a last resort. There are a few places including the worm gear shafts which could use some grease as well. Also the clamp between the worm gear and motor. which probably houses a thrust bearing.
try all of the other locations first and do the motor last. Maybe you’ll get lucky and it won’t be the motor. Otherwise what you noted is probably the best bet.
