Scroll through the pics till you see the layout in the bagage section of this car. Strange, isn’t it?
Has anyone ever seen one of these “layouts” for sale? Anyone have any advice on how to model one?
I’m, uh, what you might call a ‘connoisseur’ of wooden passenger cars, and this would look nice as a business car, but I already have a LaBelle combine on the shelf in the basement, so it wouldn’t make much since to buy the car for $50, or just buy one “layout” from a company for $10, or so.
Wow that’s nuts! Would be good for a rail museum themed layout, or part of a restaurant built from old coaches…On an old HO layout my dad and me built I had a scale 4’ by 8’ peice of “plywood” made from thin balsa representing a small layout. i painted it green, and drew a loop of track on it. I put the layout on some HO sawhorses and placed it next to a storage shed near the “1:1” tracks.
Should’ve taken pics, but the layout is long gone…
I’ve seen little layouts for years in O gauge. Lionel used to sell local hobby shop buildings with minature layouts inside. Granted they were the appropriate size for 1:48 scale but tiny nonetheless. I think some may have even been “operating” layouts, too.
I suspect a visit to GOOGLE would probably turn up something interesting.
Model railroading and common sense don’t mix well when it comes to buying. I lost control 50 years ago and have been happy ever since
Lionel did produce a hobby shop building that featured two or three layouts inside. And yes, the layouts did operate, however, the train just went around in a circle and only consist of a locomotive and two or three minature cars. But hey, it was cool nonetheless. Thanks for reminding me about that piece, I totally forgot that anyone made anything like that for commercial retail.
I just emailed the guy who has the thing for sale on eBay. I told him that it’s a matter up for discussion on this forum which surprised him, so he’s going to take a look and then get back to me with some info.
Many many years ago I visited a G-Scale layout in California; the modeler was an architect and he had done a model of his house; and there in the backyard of the “model” house was a model of the model railroad complete with a model of the model.
In a previous posting I said that I had emailed the guy who had this model for sale on eBay. I sent him the URL address and here’s his response:
Thanks for the URL. I like those comments, especially no one running the trains, and no access hatch for derailments…(real men don’t need access hatches)…Promised I’d get back to you with details. Looks like it was carved out of a solid piece of wood, with plaster or clay used only in the far corner going up the wall, tunnels hollowed out. The buildings are pieces of stripwood, but no piece is the same height or width, shapes suggesting a grain elevator, mine buildings etc. The cars are suggested by very thin pieces of stripwood 3/4 long, one of which is painted to show 9 different cars. What’s interesting to me is that on your better layouts you keep finding more interesting detail, which is also true in this 2&1/2 by 1 layout! JS
I have a model of Lat Latimore’s barn in Fort Worth on my N scale layout. Latimore’s layout was in HO. I cheated and modeled a Lionel O gauge layout in my N scale barn. Had a picture of railimages for a couple years but recently deleted my old album when they went to a new system.
For the track, I built a “dollhouse” scale mockup of the Lionel layout base in 1/12th scale, using string for the three rails of the track. Then I photographed the mockup and made a print so it was an N scale size replica of the Lionel layout.
I saw kindergarten kids playing with a play train made of pieces of 2x4 about 8 inches long and I realized that Lionel trains cars are about the same size as a chunk of 2x4. So scale 2x4 cut to length can be used to model…er…suggest Lionel equipment.
That is neat. I have seen it before, I believe in MR Mag. Now, if we can get some real people in scale to run our trains, and build layouts of our layouts, lol. <
Oh, btw, if you can’t read anything I’ve written above, scroll between the arrows while holding down the left mouse button.
So, it was a ‘Custom’ put-together. I might try my hand at making one as a master, and molding it with some Micro-Mark Resin. Would make a good fundraiser (for the save the ‘Phil Martin’s Wallet’ fund, ha, ha, ha ((don’t I sound excited? I’m not.[;)])))
