Ok I give up

I have been trying to get an American Flyer 0-8-0 fixed for my dad. For the life of me I can not get this to work. Here is what I have. I do not have the top to the tender or engine as my dad has misplaced it somewhere in the house. It has smoke in the boiler. E-unit is in the tender.

4 wire set up. I have replaced the wiring harness on it & rewired it according to the 4 wire diagram that is on port line hohhies web sight. I get the light to light on the tender but no power to the engine or the e-unit on the tender. I have also replaced the fingers on the e-unit & pollished the drum. I replaced the brushes & springs on the motor as well as polished the armeture. other than the harness going from tender to the engine I have replaced only one other in the tender all others look to be in good condition.

The wires are set up as this if you are looking from the top of the engine to the tender.

Head light - smoke - brush - upper right of plug - middle lower finger.

Head light - smoke - brush - upper left of plug - front truck of tender - top right of coil on tender.

Right field wire - right lower plug - lower right finger.

Left field wire - lower left plug - upper left finger.

Rear tender truck - light in tender - upper middle finger - left side of coil.

Can anyone help as this has been here a little while & I have always been hit or miss on AF E-units. Don’t know why as they are not that difficult of a wire set up. At least not the 4 wire.

Thank you for your time.

Take care.

Have you tried wiring the armature and field coil in series, by themselves, to see whether the motor will run?

I see that the diagram that you mention has the headlight and smoke unit in parallel with the armature. If that is correct for your locomotive, try adding them to the armature to see whether the motor still runs.

You mention only one connection for the tender light. Is the other connection to the other truck?

What is the model number?
