I have been trying to add my avatar, and after I select that I want to allow an avatar, click on browse & select my image, and click “save”… I get a message that an error has occurred. (There is a note at the bottom of the page that says “avatars are not allowed”, and yet I see other avatars being used???
Are avatars no longer allowed? If so, that’s fine… I am just baffled by the situation.
I checked my Profile and I note it does say “remote avatars disabled” so you can’t link to say a picture on your personal website or someplace like that, it has to be an image directly from your computer. I do recall the forums were taken down for a few days to be updated maybe a year ago, and at that time most or all avatars disappeared. I was able to put mine back OK, but some folks apparently still don’t have them.
BTW there could be a size limit too, some websites say they can only be a certain size(??)
What’s so hard about that? Use your browser to navigate to the image you would otherwise link to. Save the picture file to your desktop. Upload the saved picture as your avatar. Once it’s in the system, it’s in there forever, regardless if you delete it off your computer, or use a different computer to log in.
Also, users who are on a network that block photo storage sites can still see your avatar because it lives in the forum software. For example, I can’t see my own signature line images at the office because our network blocks the website that they are stored on (Photobucket). I can see them at home just fine, though.
All right, I made sure that I had “enabled” avatars, used my browser to copy and save the avatar herald to my Desktop, and then I double-checked all my settings. The “remoter avatars disabled” notice at the bottom of the Avatar page never disappeared, and when I clicked post…once again, I received the dreaded “ERROR” message. My avatar is smaller than 100 X 100, and should work… but “No Go”!!!
Thanks for everyone trying to solve the riddle, anyway… Bob
I just added a herald image as my avatar. On the “Avatar” tab of the “Update Profile” page, I clicked on “Browse” to select the image on my hard drive. Then I clicked the “Update” button. I then clicked the “Save” button.
After I clicked “Save”, the herald I chose as an Avatar was displayed on the profile page. I guess we will see if the avatar appears when I post this.
Vernon… Thanks for the “heads up” on the avatar problem, but when I followed each and every step in your instructions, I received the error message again ('Oop’s… Something went wrong!!!").
I tried to complete the “steps” you listed at least five or six times, with the same result each time. In fact I got the error message as soon as I clicked the “Update” button, and I even tried it without hiting “Update”, and using “Save” only… but that failed also.
Thanks for the effort, one and all… but I think I have a bigger problem (for some reson…)
Last month, they were apparently having issues with their server, hence the “Oops, something went wrong” message. Seems like they have the issue again, because I’m getting the message now, too when I try to post.
Well, I don’t know about max size but I know about min size. Yes, my avatar is as small as the forum would let me. It is made up of three gifs combined in Paint. A EL RS-2 pulls a heavy flat with a wrecked dash 9 on it with a EL caboose.
This is the only forum I’ve seen with so many people without an Avatar??? I had one on this forum before the big “make-over” and when they came back on line, I have been trying to install one ever since… to no avail!
Well, when all else fails… read the manual!!! I did what I should have done earlier, I e-mailed Kalmbach, and Megan fixed the problem in lightning speed.
Thanks one and all for all the suggestions on “the fix”, and a special “tip of the hat” to Megan at Kalmbach!!!
Kalmbach’s reply was signed “Megan”, and she said it was a problem with “registration” that they had to fix from their end. I logged out, and then back in again, and posted my avatar according to the standard directions.
“Quick fix”… I just wish I would have contacted Kalmbach earlier! Thanks again to one and all.
