Today my sn and I took a road trip to the PA main to railfan. I took a train picture book and waited. Naturally, I thought about what I wanted to model. I found there was just too many beautifult trains out there and I just can’t model them all. There’s the SP GS-4 Daylight. I want to model it running along the coast of Santa Barbara.
Then there’s the Alaska Railroad running north from Juneau.
And of course, the Big Kid.
Or my hometown twins.
But there’s not enough time or space to do it all.
Spacemouse , nice pics, However being a 28 yr. residence of Sitka AK. I know that the Alaska railroad does indeed run north of Juneau. About 800 miles North of Juneau. It actually begins at Seward AK and runs north thru Anchorage and on to Fairbanks. Juneau is only accessible by Boat or plane. Sorry to be a nitpicker but that was more like a large cockroach than a nit.[:)]
reklein, I was going to correct mouse myself but you beat me to it. Interesting enough, I was born and raised in Sitka myself. Just curious when you lived there? Peter Parker (class of 84).
That SP GS-4 Daylight has got to be one of the nicest paint jobs around. A complete train in Daylight colors would look good on a layout! You are right so much to model and so little time and space to do it in.
Very little ever built matches the balance and beauty of the Mikado. This babe was made in 1917 and is still earning a living at Steamtown National Historic Site:
reklein & Model Alaska: I was in AK back in 2001, we took the train from Seward at the dock to Anchorage, and then on to Denali and Fairbanks AK, the end of the line. That was one scenic ride!!! I have never seen such beauty. We visited Sitka also. Later, we took a bus to Eagle and rode the airboat down the Yukon River to Dawson, Yukon territory, and then southward to Whitehorse by motor coach. From there we took the Narrow Guage White Pass RR down the mountain to Skagway…talk about scenery and bridges…this is modelers heaven!!! My advice to all you modelers out there, save your $$ and make the trip to AK for a train ride that you will never forget!
Wow Dick, Sounds like you did your visit right! You have probably seen more of Alaska than most Alaskans (me included… lived here all my life - 40 years). I have only taken the train from Anchorage to Seward and back, but it was an incredable ride in itself. Great advice too… everyone should see this state while they can. AKB4UDIE Peter
I have to agree. I had only posted trains I probably won’t model and wish I could. But I’m planning on aquiring a mike and running the Super Skunk now and again.
