How about that–learned something new. I never knew land-locked Oklahoma had a port.

Same here Roger. Perhaps a river port? Someone clarify please.

The port is located on the Arkansas River.

There are actually 2 Ports located in Oklahoma on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System. This one in Muskogee OK and the second one is the Port of Catoosa, located at Catoosa OK which is near Tulsa OK. Both are barge serviced ports only.

Learned something new; there is actually a river port in Muskogee. When I read the title I though the Okies from Muskogee had been smoking pot.

The Tulsa Port of Catoosa is the farthest inland water port in the U.S. Also, I don’t think BNSF serves the Muskogee port direct. They have a haulage agreement with UP to move freight cars and locomotives from Tulsa to Muskogee over UP’s former Katy line, and I think UP delivers the BNSF cars to the port’s railroad yard. BNSF still has some track in Muskogee that is of Frisco origins and primarily serves the Georgia Pacific paper plant and the Okla. Gas & Electric generating plant located behind GP.

A dry port is an inland intermodal terminal that is used for transshipping cargo to locations inland that has a direct connection to a port via rail or highway. Just thought I’d clarify since Austin, Tx doesn’t have a navigable river for cargo but has a port location.

There are actually three ports on the McClellan-Kerr Navigation canal. The third one is located just out side of Wagoner Ok. and is serviced by truck and barge only. Muscogee to Catoosa is the Verdigris River and Muscogee down river is the Arkansas to the conflux with the Mississippi.

As a business professor at nearby Northeastern State University, I’ve long had students develop plans for enhancing Muskogee as a major distribution center. Muskogee has it all: the port; competing railroads – UP and BNSF – nearby highway access (U.S. 69 and U. S. 62 locally, plus I-40, I-44, U. S. 412, U. S. 75 nearby); substantial regional labor force; education (shameless plug for my institution and others), foreign trade zone, and an adequate airport runway. Given rising land prices in DFW area, Muskogee could compete with that area’s role in distribution, especially since it’s more centrally located. Muskogee has increasingly been moving in that direction: local economic development office relocated to the port.
