old bachmann 2-4-2 ??

Does anybody know the name or how I can get a hold of an old bachmann logging engine, labeled with Coal Creek Lumber Co.? I saw one at a train show, but wasn’t able to get it. it is a bachmann 2-4-2 spectrum. thanks

They haven’t been available for over 10 years. The model you’re referring to is an Americanization of the Lyn, a Brit loco made by Baldwin. The original 2-4-2 mechanism was lousy, if you can find one that still runs bear in mind that it has weak gears & NO parts are available for it. TOC will probably chime in here with exact info.
Frankly, spend you dough on something else that is reliable.

You about said it all.

“Survival of the Fittest” on the plastic.

MOST of the ones I’ve had to work on had crumbling clamshells.

Some folks claim you can haul anything with them.

Yeah, right.

When the gears go, there are no parts.

There are some in the UK, but those are for the “Lyn”, and the gear ratio is different.

IF someone gave you one, good deal.

Ten bucks and I’d start to worry.

If you’re good with re-powering, you might get some other chassis to work, but getting the outside frame to function won’t be so easy.

Ebay

seen 3 or 4 up in the last month.

Look for a late model, WP&Y being one of the last incarnations where supposedly they fixed the bad gearing issues. earlier ones are Poop, they are really great for kit bashing though, heres what I did to one of the early ones:

If your looking for one for serious operation I HIGHLY recommend geting a 2-6-0 mining mogul instead, it head and shoulders above its predecessor.

Vic- This is the tank loco 2-4-2.

OK still seen 2 at least on Ebay recent. Went for a pretty penny. Still say the 2-6-0 is a better deal.[;)]

I’d second the support for getting the 2.6.0, much better mechanisim but a bit light on its feet. With the 2.4.2 replacing the gear set completely is the best option, there are commercial gearboxes out there that can be modified to fit but it adds to the time and cost.

thanks . I almost bought it for $60, thought it was a good deal. The guy sold it before I could come back to it. guess it was a good thing!

If your enterprising and are not afraid of a little styrene surgery, I wouldnt hesitate in picking one up and converting it using a old Stainz drive. Bob Grosh did a conversion here doing just this, it worked out really well.

under what keyword are the bachmann 2-4-2’s listed on ebay?

2-4-2 & Lyn

work best

As a ex-police officer suggestion is go with your gut, if it don’t feel right don’t buy it and ask all kinds of questions!!! So people don’t know what they have. 1/2 Cents.
