Old clockwork/windup trains

I picked up a box of old model trains at an estate sale. They’re not in great condition, but I’d still like to figure out what they actually are as I can’t find markings.

Does anyone have any idea what I am looking at?

I can get more pics if there is any interest.

Welcome to the forums!
I can’t help you with this, but I’m sure that somebody here will know!

This car in particular seems cool to me. The body is wood, it’s obviously hand-painted, and it has three-axle trucks.

It’s appears to be O scale

Welcome aboard!
Aside from the fact the locomotives have a British look to them I’ve no idea who made them but they sure look interesting! The second one up on the right looks like it’s live steam!

Welcome aboard Clockwork-noob!

Take a look at the Western Division of the Train Collectors Association website. They have excellent information on many of the well known and not so well known manufacturers of toy trains since the first ones were made in the 1820’s.

My best guesses are Bassett-Lowke, Bing or Hornby. I’d start with those and see if you can match up couplers, bogies (wheel trucks) or other design and construction features that could give you a clue as to the maker(s).

Have fun!

I agree, JamesP is very knowledgable on clockwork locomotives, hopefully we hear from him! It appear at least one of the locomotives is a live steam model- 2nd row from the bottom on the far right, in the first picture.

Despite the “poor” condition, I would say you lucked upon some very cool stuff. Consider me jealous! I suspect you would do well to avoid repainting anything, even though they are fairly scuffed up.

That is an excellent find! I think more detailed pictures might help identify the various locos. Unfortunately, my expertise with clockwork trains is pretty much limited to domestic production - I have very few clockworks from across the pond in my collection. I agree that it appears there is at least one live steam loco in the group. Anyway, if you want to take the time to post more detailed pictures of each loco (maybe a separate post for each one) maybe we can figure out what you have.

Thank you!

I appreciate everyone jumping in with ideas and connections.

I’m going to check out the TVA website and see what I can find before I bug y’all more.

As Becky mentions they could be Bassett Lowke or Bing models. The models look their style. I doubt they are Hornby.

Some of the carriages have a slight resemblance to Hornby
