Old dog new tricks #2.......Sound for Reefers

Model Railroder Nov. 1983 has an electrical diagram for sound in a mechanical reefer…but DCC is AC power, can you modify this to take track power ??? I would prefer that to using a 9V battery, and mind you I’m electrically …“challenged”…[%-)]

here’s how to convert ac to dc , scroll part way down to the part about 4 diode bridges

http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/vol_3/chpt_3/4.html

you’ll also need something to reduce the voltage , i think DCC is somewhere around 14-18 volts , might be a little hard on your 9 volt circuit . the circuits shown are for normal AC , somebody who avtually knows something about electronics will have to tell you if it will work with DCC

maybe a better idea , put a cheap dcc decoder in the boxcar and use the function outputs to run the sound circuit . then you can turn it off when you want

I never thoght about the decoder, I like that, plus when we run our module the kids would get a kick out of that.

On one of the Yahoo DCC groups (I think it was in DCC4Everyone), Mark Gurries posted a circuit diagram for a voltage regulator to run things off DCC track power. Various voltages are shown, including 9v. It also has a keep-alive capacitor to avoid power interruptions on dirty track, but Mark’s circuit includes the current limiting that SHOULD have been on QSI sound decoders to avoid a current inrush problem, even with a large capacitor.
I can’t post a link as you need to join the group to be able to open the files.

Thanks, any help I can get from yhe group is appreciated[:)][:)]
