old Floquil

I have a lot of Floquil left over from 1985. I mixet a bottle of roof brown with a micro mark mixer and brushed it on some wood and PC board ties as a test. It appeared to dry OK but didn’t stick to either very well. I did put in some Dio Sol to bring the consistency down to what I think it was originally. Not thin enough to spray.

Is there a reason I couldn’t use this stuff? I hate to throw it all away as it is no longer readilly available in Canada.

I have some also about the same age and I use it OK. Dio Sol isen’t avalable anymore. There was a thread awhile ago where some said use laquer thinner, some said use regular paint thinner some said use Testors red 8 oz can thinner. Some of mine leaked out on the way home from the hobby shop, so keep it standing upright.

The only reason not to use it, is if you don’t like the results.

I’ve used common lacquer thinner in Floquil paints with reasonable success.

I’ve still have a few old square bottles that are perfectly fine and still usable…

WHY won’t the newer round bottles… less than a year old with any red in them keep. I’ve tried all sorts of tricks for preserving them: upside down, BBs to take up space and push the air out, wiping out glass and cap before resealing them. I come back and the varnish base has kicked off to a skin and is unusable.

Are they putting in more driers now just to make me buy a new one. At three to four dollars a bottle I’m looking elsewhere for paint.

What am I doing wrong?

see ya

Once Floquil starts to thicken, it is reacting to the air and is really not very useful. You cannot reverse the reaction by thinning, paint can probably only be used with a brush and not in an airbrush. That’s the way it goes.

Bob…

Thank you for noting the irreversible nature of the paint. My point was that the older bottles seemed not to have a problem… I’ve had half full square bottles and open and close them regularly.

What did they change or why did they change that causes it to be so susceptible to the kicking off now?

Thanx

Bob
