Does anyone have an old, dirty lionel set I can have (I’ll pay shipping and throw in $20.00 (The dirtier the better) I take ones with missing parts, too I am in 6th grade and need it for an extra-credit project about restoration. I’ll also take single engines, too.[:P]
Have you tried looking thru some of the local thrift shops, etc. ?
I’d second what doug says - many people LIKE fixing up old junkers as well, so I’m not sure you’ll find anything free here. I recommend looking at garage or yard sales too - and with the help of a parent, you can find lots of items on eBay.com
I saw a junk lot go on eBay for $39 this week, with no takers. The lot included an untested transformer and a junker 2026. I thought long and hard about it but I’m on a prewar kick, so I didn’t.
If you’re semi-patient, you can find junker locomotives there pretty cheap. Junker Lionels usually sell for less than junker Marxes, ironically. Probably because the Marxes are a little easier to fix.

I have to agree with what all others say that it’s going to be awfully hard to find “junk” for free. Most dealers aren’t going to give it to you, because, even if the piece is pretty bad as a whole, they’ll part it out and get a fairly decent amount of money doing that. As for myself, I’ve paid $10 each for cars, and ended up with some halfway decent pieces. I paid $125 for a junker 681, and ended up with a pretty nice engine without a whole lot of work.

Junk more often than not seems to come from people who buy it secondhand who don’t know trains, then sell on eBay or to dealers. I know I keep a stash of junkers (just cars in it, no engines at the moment) to plunder parts from when I have occasion to find a good car that’s just missing something.
