old Lionel O27 values -- 3 items

I got sent here from the Model RRing general forum… I have come into possession of three old metal Lionel O27 items. No intent to sell them, but I’d like somebody’s expert valuation for appraisal purposes. They are: (a) Lionel #258 2-4-2, metal cast, heavy as heck, the one with the shrouding reminiscent of the NYC “Rexall Train” engine; (b) Lionel Lines #1689T tender; (c) metal caboose, NYC 1682. Vintage maybe late-'30’s? Excellent condition all three, rust-free, clearly well-stored over time. I have no reason to think the engine wouldn’t run. Somebody got a good guess $-wise? Thanks!

Alco,

Punch the numbers into E-Bay and see what they are going for.

From your description, I think that your engine must be a Lionel #1689 streamliner with a 1689T tender. Lionel did not make a 258 streamline engine nor were they for 027. The 1689 steamer would remind you of the Rexall Train. Its a streamline engine in the style of the Commodore Vanderbilt. This engine and tender were catalogued from 1936-1938. In excellent condition, price guides put this combination around $100. It would be more valuable if the tender had a whiste. The lithographed 1682 caboose was catalogued from 1933-1941. In excellent condition, its price guide value is $30. Again, price guides are just that guides, but it puts you in the ballpark in terms of value. I hope this helps and welcome to the forum!

The caboose #1682 is more valuable if it has “Ives” on the side of it.

The #258 is an O gauge loco. This is according to Greenberg’s pocket price guide of 2006.

Thank you so much – #258 was the number on the cab; gotta be #1689 as the Commodore Vanderbilt resemblance is clear. This equipment doesn’t fit with my “Disheartened Carton Empire”, as that’s odds and ends of AF S gauge and HO; but it’s good to know its vintage (guessed right) and value. Thanks again.
