My grandpa had a very old Lionel train set that has very little information on it concerning what model it is. Since he passed away, we are trying to figure out what is worth keeping. We have one that is very old, probably from the 40’s or 50’s. I took some pictures of it to help anyone try to figure it out. Any help is welcome, whether it is telling me what type it is or helping me to find out on my own. I appreciate any help you can give.
The set is from 1964. It has been cobbled. The set origionally came with a 3309 turbo missle launcher which is missing. The silver tank car did not come with the set. Nor did the silver hopper which is not a 60’s era Lionel piece. Track was packed with the set where one of the cars is sitting. According to Greenburg, the set would be worth $300 in like new, complete condition but that’s because the missle car, which is missing adds a substancial premium to the set. To a collector, my guess is the set would be worth $75 for the engine and set box. The cars have little collector value.
If you wan’t to sell the set, try E-bay - there are suckers out there who will pay many times it’s worth. Don’t mention the missle car - just post your pics, set a minimum of $200 and see what happens. (My personal advise would be to keep them - I really wish I had my 1950’s pieces along with my 2 uncle’s sets that I sold for a price I’m embarassed to mention (in the 1960’s))!!![:I]
