Old locomotives NEVER die , a new twist for an old GE

Looks very little like the C-30 -7 anymore !

Randy

OK… there’s supposed to be a picture here !!!.. Alright , there it is … How do I make it BIGGER ??

Why does it take so damn long to get this edit to post ???

<<< this is the new electrical cabinet in one of our C-30 -7 locomotives that suffered a catastrophic electrical fire .

Randy,

Don’t see a pic. When I post pix, I always host them on my PBase site. Once there, I type in the address, add .jpg to the end (since the actual link is to an HTML page…typing in .jpg extracts the picture from the page) and type {img} before it and {/img} after, except the { should be typed as [ and the } as ].

I guess that’s pretty confusing. If I can make it any clearer somehow, let me know.

Look at Randy’s Avatar, that is the picture.

OK… my head just exploded … I don’t believe I have a PBase site… No idea what address to type in … and the rest seems like really bad Cyrillic …

Randy, is the shot someplace on the web? If it’s on the web, post the link, and I’ll make the shot work. If it’s not on the web, e-mail me the shot (click the little e-mail button at the bottom of my post), and I can host it on my site if you want.

A little back ground is in order . This locomotive (C-30-7) had a major electrical fire (big surprise huh ?) We have decided to rebuild and rewire this engine . The GE locomotive is an efficient machine , we have found a fuel savings of 7% compared to an equivelant EMD ( besides EMD’s are impossible to find) . The Major shortcoming in the dash 7 locomotive , especially ones that have been “modified” over the years , is the poor performance of the electrical system. We will correct this using technology from Quantum engineering .

As time goes on I will try to post more photo’s of the progress … should be fun .

Good to hear that someone is finally putting those old GEs to good use! Had to happen eventually…

Ah scrap em all! Grins Good to see, although ive never been a fan of GEs, the older ones do have the ugly but classic look to them! Alec

Well… I’m not a fan of them either , it’s what we got and it’s my job to make them work . I was never a fan of the SD-45 either , but I became VERY attached to them over the last 15 years or so !

Randy

Randy: did that fire happen while the locomotive was occupied?[:O] That would cause a little excitement

It was in service as a trailing engine in a consist but it still caused alot of exitement .

Randy

Randy,

When you say rewire is that a complete rewire, i.e. cab controls, engine sensors, MU controls and such or is it just wiring related to control, manipulation of the power related to the main alternator?

Rebuilding the old stuff rocks, anytime you don’t need a laptop with a manufacture’s software to track down a problem you are doing good.

Keep it up with the pictures!

All of the wire and cable .

“Houston, we have a problem”

Amen, Randy…

Who would have thought that the electrical system on a locomotive made by General Electric would be a trouble spot? [;)]

Some new pics from Randy:

Thank you very much cop car ss !!!

The first shot shows the high voltage power contactors rebuilt and ready to be reinstalled .

The second is a quick view of the locomotive in it’s usual spot .
