old timer and newbie all in the same person.

greetings,

my name is adam and i have been playing with model trains since i was 8. now that i am 36 i am getting back into model railroading. i have been working on my HO layout for about a year now and am really enjoying getting back into the hobby.

i am doing a german layout which makes it hard to come by trains at the local hobby store. so i spend alot of time online looking at trains. i have a multitude of questions but wanted to introduce myself first and say hello first.

Welcome to the forums and back to the hobby.

Seems you have the opposite problem to that of many folks, they are not in the US and are modeling US railroads. (Shipping)

There are many good and knowledgeable folks here, ready and willing to answer your questions when you have them.

Have fun,

Richard

Adam! [#welcome]

Show us some pictures as your layout progresses.

A big [#welcome] from a German still in Germany.

You have found the right place - lots of friendly and knowledgeable folks in here, who will eagerly share their wisdom with you. Just don´t hesitate to ask your questions!

If you need info on German trains, there are also a number of native Germans ready to answer your questions.

[#welcome] To the forums!

And thank you for introducing yourself!

Yes, I know haw hard German trains are to get here in teh USA.

I am Fortunate that My Other Half is into traisn as well…I do HO MOH does N scale…and MOH having a German mother and having spent every other summer in Germany with German Grandmother, has “romanticized” the European-specifically German DeutcheBahn trains.

What MOH wants can be found over here all day long in HO scale, but N scale is another matter.

To order online here can take 8 months or so for delivery and talk about expensive!!! $500 for a loco? that’s about loco!! Of course some American locos are getting to be $300 so not far off.but don’t take 8 months to get here!

But If you have you heart set on it…GO for it…just plan out well and study MANY online e-tailers who carry such. Look for LHS that DO carry German/euro trains…and see if they are close enough to make a trip…not all have stuff advertised online.

Well, I am not trying to discourage you, just a reality check. MOH suffers with you, I assure you.

WEll, enjoy the hobby and again [#welcome] aboard!!

i have to say that i have gotten lucky on the building side of the layout. i have found a number number of faller and vollmer online from retailers here in the US, and of corse i use my walthers flyer catalog to find some really cool buildings.

on the loco side i have been even luckyer. as i am working on a very limited budget dropping 500 on a loco would take me year to save up for. but i found a HO scale Piko ICE set about 3 years ago for about 109 and it running like the wind. but the biggest deal was from a guy on ebay selling a vintage piko that would not run for 25 dollars. the set was a little dirty, but looked ok. the engine was filthly and just really needed a little WD40 and a good cleaning and it came back to life and runs beautifully.

as for pictures i will have to work my website to get some pics of the lapout up for you all to see.

I have two stores that deal exclusively in European rail 15 minutes away from me in opposite directions. I go in to buy things like static grass or other things that can be used on a North American layout. I certainly see the attraction of modeling European Railways. The engines, rolling stock and buildings are spectacular in detail.

Post pics, they are always welcome.
