Older 1980's era IHC Obsevation Interior

Back in the 80’s I purchased a bunch of passenger cars by what I remember as being made by IHC. I omothballed them for decades because of poor running qualities, but recently I replaced the trucks and couplers, then added weight. The result was great, but I’m perplexed by the boat-tailed observation car. The window arrangement seems very strange and I can’t place. Does anyone know if that window arrangement fits any known interior design? I’d love to put an interior into it, but have no clue what would fit those windows.

I asuume from the name you are talking about a GN car.

However,t until you confirm the raijlroad name we can only guess which passenger train tail end/observation car you were talking about. Also a picture.

If it the GN check Walthers for the Empire Builder cars, is that it?

IHC made many passenger tail end cars, also was it prototype or just painted for which ever railroad

Rapido also released their Canadian passenger set which has a Budd car observation car

You can see the seating arrangement for the end of the car in the above parts sheet.

Hello GN,

You’ve experiencing the frustrations that many of us did back in the 80s. IHC, Rivarossi, and AHM streamlined passenger cars were basically “generic” with only a few coming “reasonably close” to prototypes, such as the Rivarossi Budd Observation car, which was from the Reading’s Crusader.

IHC interiors can still be found on ebay. Here’s one:

Just my opinion, but if the winning bid remains in the low teens then it’s not a bad deal.

You can purchase a boat tail obs car interior kit from Palace Car Company. It is pricier, but they look nice. I’m assuming that you have the 85footer. The Palace Car Co Con Cor observation interior would work on your unit.

Or you could purchase a Walthers UP or PRR square end obs.

Ndbprr

remember, he had his IHC units in storage for years, dug them out, and updated them for better performance. So he wants to put them to use instead of junking or selling them off.

I think I understand where he’s coming from. Years back I strongly considered selling all of my Rivarossi HO passenger units and go strictly with Walthers cars only. But after considering the price of replacing passenger cars in this economy I decided to “work with what I got” and supplement my Walthers fleet. I enjoyed the challenge of upgrading the Rivs and AHM cars. Now they look decent and actually give me fewer problems than my Walthers units, lol! [:P]

I have been e-maiilng IHC-Texas about once a year asking if they are going to produce their passenger car interior kits again. They usually say maybe in another 6 or 8 months. They appear to be producing some cars again; anyone looking for interiors should contect them and ask when/if?? If we show then there is a demand for the product, maybe they will produce it again. Am I holding my breath on this? NO [:-,]

Good points GPaine,

The blue & red colored IHC “Premium” interiors looked quite nice although a coat of gray or tan primer should be applied before painting the individual pieces the desired colors.

Although their configurations were generic and not road specific they look attractive and realistic when painted with flat finishes. I wonder if IHC is hesitant to produce the kits since Palace Car and Rapido are producing passenger car interiors?
