Omaha television station plans to renovate former Burlington station

Always great to see historic structures as well as rolling equipment get saved. The buildings are a major part of the historic fabric that always seems to get torn down in the name of progress! So THANK YOU TV STATION!

Hate to see this fine building torn down. too many stations destroyed.

This is the second retired rail station I know of to be occupied by a TV station. At one time–maybe still–one of the stations in Butte, Montana housed a local TV station.

Denis: They’re NOT tearing this building down.

KETV won’t raze the building. And it’s too large for a TV station. They will modify the interior with studios, electronic facilities, offices, and probably large meeting rooms that will be provided free to the community for meetings. Also look for them to develop rental spaces for restaurants, etc.

It’s a shame that Omaha has two beautiful railroad stations and that Amtrak uses an Amshack for a station.

How long ago did the plan to turn it into upscale condos die? I remember in around 2008 seeing the plans which looked really ambitious but with the economic collapse not surprising that it never came to fruition.

Maybe you should see if, “The Oricle of Omaha” can help. After all, he does own a couple of train sets. Good luck.

It seems we’re coming to appreciate our architectural heritage more and more. That’s especially fitting in this case, since it was the razing of New York’s Penn Station that spawned the modern preservation movement. Thanks, KETV.

I got off the Nebraska Zephyr there in 1967 with my grandmother. I can still remember her calling my aunt on a payphone to tell her to come to the station to pick us up. I’m glad the building will be preserved!

Denis, please reread the story.

The station in Butte used by a TV station is the former Milwaukee Road station with a large tower. Impressive. I was in it a few years ago during the MRHA convention. Got to see much of the inside and they kept the original lettering on the glass in the inside doors. Nice touch.

The current Omaha Amtrak station is not the one first used in 1974. It was only a glorified trailer at first. The current was built sometime in the 80’s, if I recall correctly.
