On30 loco choice

So, I am going to buy an On30 locomotive from Train World. But I am wondering which one would be better, detail, etc and otherwise. My choices are the 4-6-0 DCC no sound($239), and the 2-6-0 DC($109). Which one do you think I should get?

What are you running, DCC or DC?

Also, what is your budget and which one do you like best?

Does that mean you now go down the On30 way? Not Sn42 anymore?

The 4-6-0 loco from Bachmann is a different breed of loco than the 2-6-0. There is more detail to it, compared to the rather naked look of the 2-6-0.

Finally, it is a question of personal liking and/or budget.

Since I am budget minded I would recommend the 2-6-0 and add the details you want and adding a decoder if that is your desire. You will get more hobby for your money than you would if you bought the better detailed decoder equipped model.

They both look OK to me, though I prefer the looks of the 4-6-0. Awhile back, I think you said you liked Ten-wheelers most of all. So, the choice would appear obvious. If you’ve got the bucks. And want to spend them.

If it’s going to be kitbashed, I’d definitely say the 2-6-0. As others have pointed out, the ten-wheeler is more detailed…but it’s detailed with O scale parts. So if you’re looking to make this engine into Sn42, those are parts that are going to have to be removed and replaced. With the mogul, not only is your initial investment substantially lower, but the main work will be simply ADDING details (once you get past things like replacing the cab, etc.). And since this is your first project of this type, it makes sense to start small.

As Fred recommended in the other thread, the Porter would also be a very good choice.

Well what scale are you? First it was HO then Sn42 and know you are doing On30.

second. What are you looking for in the engines, pulling power, the details on it or do you just want to put it on the track and let it run.

It all depends on what you like because we cant speak for what you like or want.Just buy the one you like.

I am still in Sn42, but I was told I should experiment with On30, so I was going to, but now I am not going to. Instead I shall just convert one straight to Sn42.

I am looking for good running engines, without DCC, with okay details, but not much, as I will make them how I like em when I change the scales. Pulling power needs to be about 6 to 10 cars. and, no I don’t want to stick it on the track and let it run. I think I will now decide between the Bachmann HO 4-6-0, or the IHC HO 2-6-0. Wondering if in the real world which would be a better hill climber. So There are my options, still deciding. Also, since I can’t find any Sn42 conversion cabs, I shall take measurements and increase them by 28%, which is how much bigger S is than HO.

So you are now going to get a HO scale engine from Bachmann and then make it Sn42 or are you still going to make a On30 engine in to a Sn42?[banghead]

HO to Sn42, and I am going to take a Bachmann 4-6-0 and make it Sn42. You can forget this thread. Also picked the bachmann, cause if I make a mistake, I can buy new parts for it, just don’t know where I can get an undecorated on with 63" drivers…than again, how do you remove decals?

When you actually have an engine or car sitting in your hand then let us know and then we will tell you how to remove lettering (factory lettering doesn’t use decals).

Oh by the way, it won’t matter, since the only places there is lettering on a steam engine is on the tender and the cab, and to convert an engine from HO to Sn42 you will have to replace the tender and the cab because they are out of scale, the way you will remove the lettering is with a screwdriver.

Why are you modeling Sn42, and not a more common narrow gauge scale? If you went with, say, On30 or On3, you would have a lot more choices and it would be a lot less work to build your fleet.

As for redoing the lettering, see my post on repainting an RS-3.

You had to ask? http://cs.trains.com/TRCCS/forums/t/190826.aspx?PageIndex=1

Have you checked out Narrow Gauge and ShortLine Gazette, or Canadian Railway Modeller, or any of the S scale oriented magazines, to see if someone offers kits to change HO or On30 engines without you needing to build everything from scratch. In carpentry they say “measure twice, cut once”, I’d say in model railroading you should plan and research as much as possible before buying stuff you might not be able to use.

[:-^]

Well why are you so set on the Sn42 instead of a more common scale that would be easier to work with?

Do you even have the loco yet or have the plans and materials and tools to do all that?

Wow, the same question asked and only 5 hours apart. As they say around here, “you need to attend more meetings”.

He’s been asked the same question in every other thread he’s started. Also every thread has the point when he tells everybody to “forget this thread” and then resumes it later.

I GIVE UP! I WILL GO WITH ON30, NO MATTER HOW DISGUSTED I AM BY OVER HANG! YOU WIN! NO MORE SN42! I’LL SAVE THAT FOR LATER! GOOD BYE!

I am going to purchase an On30 mogul, and change the looks, to save money. It will look just like the 4-6-0, but smaller. I am going to leave you all alone know. I wish I knew how to lock a thread. Good bye. Reply if you feel obliged.
