Hi there,
Name is Alan Aitken, and i am from Edinburgh Scotland. I am just starting out an On30 logging layout, based in the early 1900’s.
I am looking to model a mill and pond (in the Middle) as the main scene with a dock at one end of the layout and at the other just mountians and forests.
Modelling in On30 what would be the best radius to use, i have a few logging cars and an 2-8-2 Baldwin.
Can anyone help me with some webpages or pictures of layouts in the ear so i can get some idea’s??
Many thanks for taking the time to read this
Regards
Alan Aitken
Welcome to the forum. I know nothing of On3, but have a logging section on my layout. I will look forward to your progess and pictures. I will share ideas as you get to the parts where I have some. I did do a pond (swamp) in the middle of my camp. Here is a pic before I started the details.

Here is the end with the cattails and grass.

The easy answer is radi as big as possible, just like any other scale. Another answer is “same as HO.” The Bachmann RTR and other On30 items are based on HO size running gear, so use that for a guide. I myself use flex track and sweeping radi. Works great. Here’s a link to my layout plan. http://www.2guyz.info/2g/beaverhole/bh.html (which is interactive). At the bottom is a link to the On30 webring which has other On30 layouts. Fred
Try here for a discussion of logging layouts. The first one is a good source of logging information.

Thanks for all the Info.
I am just waiting to move into my new house, should be in the next few days. Where there is a part floored attic just screeming to be filled. So when i get in and get it measured up, i can start planning a layout.
Was thinking of spliting it into 3 sections, Mountain/forest to one end. Big Saw Mill complex in the middle, and a Dock with a small town at the other.
I have also noticed that alot of people have suggested putting Staging under the layout on a lower level. This solves allmy problems, I wanted to detail so much on the layout i thought i might have to lose some to put staging in.
What kind of height would i require between the underside of the layout and the track bed of the staging??
I will post the layout on the boards in the stages im doing it, and any comments or advise would be greatfully received.
I use AutoCAD 2006 everyday as i am a Draftsman, is there any packages avaiable for Track design, that might cover On30?
Thank you for the comments look forward to recieving more
Regards
Alan
I’m not sure if XtraCAD has On30 packages or not. It is open source though (and free) and there is a Yahoo users group as well, which is where you may ultimately have to get the program.
