i have two 8x4 pieces of board that i want to use in a L shape…is that enough room for a logging layout for On30?
It should be, that would allow you to use 22"R curves which should be fine with On30 logging equipment. Even if it will take sharper curves, your equipment will look better using the largest curves and turnouts that you can, so I’d try using No. 5 or 6 turnouts and try to stick to 22" as your minimum radius curve, with some larger “cosmetic” curves throw in where possible.
You could try checking out O Gauge Railroading magazine’s O Narrow Gauge Forum for more info.
As long as you don’t put the two pieces up against a wall. Four feet is too wide to reach across, both for construction and operation. You will need an aisle on both sides to reach everything. Don’t be afraid to explore other options. Cut each 4x8 in half and make a big rectangle , with a 2x8 on each end and a 2x8 on each side. That makes a big “doughnut” that you can stand in the middle of and run trains around you. If you consider the aisle you will need around the 4x8’s it probably won’t take up any more space and has LOTS more advantages, operationally and scenically. It can be pushed up against the wall.
thank you guys so much
