On30 Scale [?]

[?] I am still having a problem understanding this " On30 Scale ". I understand that it can be used on HO scale track. What I would like to know is the " On30 Scale " a larger car (or engine) or smaller car (or engine) than the normal HO scale cars (or engine)? Thanks for your help, ennout [:D]

On30 is O scale, 1:48. The track width is narrow gauge - 30" instead of the standard gauge of 4’-8-1/2". 30" in O scale happens to be the same width as HO track width.

Engines and cars are O scale, larger than HO scale (1:87).

Since narrow gauge equipment runs on narrower track, it is normally smaller in physical size. That was one of the benefits of narrow gauge - smaller and less expensive equipment for a railroad. On30 equipment will therefore be smaller that full sized O scale stuff, but it is still larger than HO equipment.

On30 can run on HO scale track, but the ties are too small and are too close together to be prototypically correct. Proper On30 track corrects this.

FundyNorthern,
I finally understand. You explained that very well.
Thanks, ennout

One thing to keep in mind is that the buildings, people, etc are all normal O scale. So if you build a layout these are going to take the same space as an they would on a standard gauge railroad.

If you like the size of the locos and cars, but are not interested in narrow gauge, I would suggest you look at S scale. This site http://www.trainweb.org/crocon/sscale.html has information on S.

Enjoy

best of both worlds.
