I was hearing rumours that there wouldn’t be a smaller Tsunami as they were trying to sell the whole loco decoder package so I mailed Soundtraxx to see if I could get a Tsunami like the factory fitted ones for my On30 Shay and climax and this was the response,
These systems were designed for factory installation and you would not be
able to install them yourselves as it would require special equipment. We
will have a smaller Tsunami that will fit in these locos by the first of
the year. Make a note to check our website in January. Thank you for your
It’s got a bunker half the size of the decoder and believe me the rest is solid, no way i’m putting it in the cab as it’s got an open cab conversion from backwoods minatures. This is a little narrow gauge loco not a standard gauge beasty!
It might be an alternative to check and see if the original Soundtraxx plug and play kits for the Shay (and Climax) are available. That’s what I used in my models. Not the greatest volume as the teeny tender doesn’t have much room, and the two circuit boards - the original and the sound one - along with the 1" speaker and large capacitor are jammed in there.
I did a short video of these sound units in my Shay and Climax, and also included my Broadway Limited 2-8-0 as a comparison as it is so much larger and fuller with its large tender and dual speakers. Check out the video here:
Nope, not now you can’t. The decoder is too wide to fit inside the tender. Now, if they make a smaller version like they are saying, then that might fit. The Tsunami at present will not.
