One Day, 18 Miles, Plenty Of Trains.

Well, I hopped on a bike, and rode to the nearest train station, armed with my fathers camera, I took many pictures. Heres what I have for one day of biking 18 miles.

First train, a Union Pacific ES44AC followed by an Illinois Central GP something or other (Still trying to learn my units from just looking at them) and a Union Pacific C44-9W. A few pictures will follow this.

As I was taking pictures, two SD40-2s came from behind me, I snagged a quick picture, who doesn’t like double meets?

I couldn’t help but get some Metra shots in there. Heres a few pictures of the Chicago Transit System at its finest.

I caught a

Nice shots. FWIW that IC unit is a GP40 and has recently been up in my neck of the woods. Great catch on it and the patched SP units you saw.

UP 9578 is ex-SP, nice catch.

UP 4430 is an SD70M, not a MAC.
UP 2356 is an SD60M, not a MAC.

A good site for UP loco info is www.utahrails.net and then follow the UP links.

Both SD40-2s you saw are ex-CNW engines so neat catch on those too!

You sure had a nice assortment of power to see.

Illinois Prairie Path Main Stem Wheaton to Elmhurst riding next to the UP (ex CNW) Geneva Sub with a couple of side trips including Al’s Hobby Shop in Elmhurst???

Those are delicious pictures. I also have a tip about those chain-link fence shots. When shooting through them like that, try to poke your lens through the hole in the fence (or at least get it as close as you can if it won’t fit). That generally helps keep those annoying things out of your way. Hopefully that helps a bit.

Why yes, he has a delightful hobby store there [tup] I love the prarie path that runs along the tracks.

Yes, thats what I did today for these shots.

^This one got away from me ;)^

Welcome to the neighborhood, Mike!

Just until August 2nd that is, as you can see, I live in St. Peters Missouri (well, pretty much St. Louis[West of St. Louis!]) Any who, I’m up here for vacation, I’m going to my grand parents in Glen Ellyn sometime next week, so I won’t have to bike 7 miles to get to a good railfanning spot [:D] Oh my god, is it hard to find a good picture of that yard, its at least a mile long, and if your an avrage railfanner, where I was is the only way to get pictures!

Best regards,

Mike
