one industry or two

i am trying to figure out if i should put a grain mill and a coal industry. i have a grain co op and i am going to have a truck dump loading coal on to train. i am going to have a background in the middle of my layout… the layout is on a table.

Seems to me that if you are going to have a grain mill that you are modeling the midwest. Wouldn’t they tend to strip mine?[I]

yup i am modeling the midwest. what else could i do?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEeMc4RelKw

THIS VIDEO WAS MADE DECEMBER 27. I HAVE MADE THE RIVER AND IS WORKING ON FIGUREING OUT WHAT ELSE I CAN ADD. I MIGHT BE ADDING MORE TRACKS TO THE LAYOUT.

Team track or interchange. Either one will provide a wide variety of rolling stock.

rolling stock, i have a ton.

A personal pet peeve.

Why would you want a coal mine???

Why not have a feed dealer that also sells coal? You will find a thousand examples of a grain mill and coal dealer UNLOADING cars of coal on the same siding for every one grain mill on the same spur as a coal mine.

I think only you can answer that question. I have a couple industries that are off the table and have only the loading side of it- my gravel yard that supplies my cement factory is a good example. I have the loading area with some heavy equipment and conveyors and mounts of gravel but the pit mine/ quarry is not modeled.

One of my pet peeves is referring to an interchange as an industry. An interchange track is not a “universal industry” it’s your railroad’s connection to the rest of the world. If you have a simple shelf or tabletop layout with no staging, if you want to do any sort of realistic operations or switching all your cars will go from the interchange track to an industry on the layout, and vice versa.

It truly is up to you. One thing you can do, possibly(I’ve not watched your video) is have different levels for different scenes/places. Those levels can be seperated by whatever distance you choose, normally very close to be prototypical. But it’s your layout. I’ve seen lots of coal trains run by grain elevators. But I’ve never seen a grain train run through the strip mine’s loading zone.

BTW, we still have a coal dealer located next to a RR. He also sells wood, propane and some other stuff. Not saying he gets supplied by the RR any more.
