Just bought a Lionel 456 coal ramp that I expect will need a bit of restoration. Will any of the Lionel or K-Line operating hoppers work fine? Are there some versions to avoid?
You will need a postwar Lionel 3456 operating hopper. They are on ebay frequently. The modern Lionel versions don’t work without modification, because the coupler shanks are longer. I am unsure about the K- Line hoppers though.

What if the ramp is a modern rerun? I assume the new cars will work with it. Do the PW cars not work with the new ramp?

The new ramp (456R) supposedly works with all version of Lionel’s operating hopper, but I only have the postwar ramp, so I can’t personally confirm that.
