Hey guys - and gals. I’ve got a friend that’s into HO that has his eye on an HO Broadway Limited 2-8-2 Western Pacific Mikado at one of his favorite train shops. The price on it is $210.00. It’s brand new, but there’s nothing special about it as in no DCC or sound. My question is, is it worth what they’re asking ?..
Walthers.com has similar pricing and I own a heavy mike with about that cost minus the LHS discount with sound and DCC.
My gut tells me that the asking price is too much for the engine since there is no sound or DCC.
I dont see any “Stealth” 2-8-2’s sold without DCC and Sound with reduced pricing to match.
Bottom line, I think the pricing is too high and there must be a story behind the lack of Sound and DCC. For 229.00 or any pricing close to it for this engine MSRP there needs to be sound and DCC installed.
Overall I think these are good engines and might get a copy without sound and DCC if the price was around $120- or so. But I prefer factory installed DCC and sound so that’s going to cost a few dollars.
Yea, if it’s a “stealth” (no sound) heavy BLI Mike, $210 is steep. You can get a Trix Light Mike for that price…and it comes with sound and runs smoother than the BLI.
Try BLI’s own Outlet Direct. Access their site, click on Outlet Direct in lower left menu, and check out their weekly updated listings of factory seconds, warranty returns, or damaged packages that customers refused. I have two locos from them, and they work and look just fine. Fully warranted.
Agreed, that is a hefty retail price for one of those Mikes. You’ll get one for about $170 (?) from Outlet Direct.
Is anyone going to bother to check with the hobby shop and see if they made an honest mistake in misreading an invoice and marking it with the wrong price???
How about double checking to make sure it’s a model with sound or no sound? People are constantly getting that confused and manufacturers, in my opinion, could do a much better job labeling what has sound and what doesn’t.
In the 2007, 2006 and 2005 Walthers books and the 2006 Broadway Limited catalog…I don’t even see a WP 2-8-2 listed to check the MSRP…is he sure what model it is?
That website link above to BLI shows no WP 2-8-2…and those that ARE listed are not available until November 2006. I also did a quick check eBay under several possible listings and didn’t find one.
And you guys accusing a shop of selling too high…you are comparing apples to oranges. Just because it sells on eBay for one price doesn’t mean someone else is being unfair. Too quick to judge around here. How come when someone pays over MSRP for an item on eBay, no one accuses the eBay seller of gouging?
Why? Because it IS an auction. You can’t compare eBay prices with real store prices.
I am sorry I did not do a very good job with the question.
Ask your friend to go to the store where the engine is and ask to look at it and perhaps get it demonstrated on the HO track and see if it does have sound and DCC.
Broadway has not really been updating their site these last 4 weeks except to write in new placeholders for the upcoming new engines or to update the outlet direct.
You are correct, sir. I merely made my comment based on a quick ebay search that resulted in similar, but not the same model. I also found none available yet, but for comparisons sake, I searched a BLI mikado. All that said, either the price could be a mistake, OR it might even be inline. Who knows until they are available. As usual, yours is the voice of reason. I sure wish you had an LHS around here.
No mistake on the price One Track Mind. Nor is it mislabled. I’ve seen the engine myself and it appears to have been there for a couple of years or so. I have a Kato N scale model that looks exactly like it, or rather should I say that it does now since I’ve added the extra details to it. I did a bit of research on the web before posting my question, but didn’t find anything, so I turned to you guys - and gals. I have to say that it’s a nice looking little loco, but I don’t know if it’s worth $210.00, especially if it doesn’t have any special features about it like DCC or sound…
Gotta know the product line, Track. If it’s a USRA heavy Mike in WP lettering, it’s a first run. If it’s a first run, it’s got sound. If it’s got sound, the MSRP is $210.
So it’s not that it’s mismarked or mispriced, it’s that the LHS owner is a fool, and thinks he’ll unload the engine at full MSRP. There are hoby shops in the northern Illinois area that have Athearn Mikes sitting on their shelves after SEVEN years, still with the full MSRP on them ($135).
And people wonder why their local LHS dies…
Actually, you can, and quite easily. Ebay is MUCH more than an auction site these days. Not only are there full-bore Ebay stores, but there’s always the option of “buy it now”. Besides, the auctions are free market capitalism at it’s best. Wonder why a BLI Mike w
Do you understand what the shipping is for on ebay and the potential problems with the bidding? The buying process is increasingly complicated each year. Also manpower must be set aside to photograph, catalog, process the photos, prepare the product sheet, upload everything to epay and get charged twice and no gaurantee of being able to sell the item.
I think it was several hours for each sale and that is just me working on the sale. After the sale it will need to be wrapped up and shipped. Why, you would need one or two people to hire and do all of that for ye.
Let’s say if the man did buy the 2-8-2 at $210. He’ll take it home to a chorus of “Oooohs… and (all together now… ) Aaaaaaahs” until one says how much was it?
I think some shops die because they are indeed a trifle stubborn and price things way too high. I recall seeing an Athearn Genesis 2-8-2 with a damaged driver set on one side missing spokes with a $140- tag on it. I will bet you that same engine is probably gathering dust right there in that exact same display case 3 years down the line.
Anyways, for 210… the DCC and sound better work on that model =)
