Opinions on Bachmann N-Scale 4-8-2 Heavy Mountain Loco

I’m considering the purchase of a N-scale Bachmann 4-8-2 Heavy Mountain steamer. This loco got a good review (Rated A) in the N-scale Locomotive Encyclopedia, but I’d like the opinions of any recent owners of this loco. The forum archives have some reviews, but some are rather dated. I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has had recent experience with this loco in N scale. I’m especially interested in your experience with it’s reliability, operation and pulling power. How easy/difficult is it to convert to a different decoder or sound?

Thanks for your help,

Bob

I own one and like it.Motor isn’t as smooth as a Kato but pulling power is quite good.I’ve used it on a fifteen in. curve without any problem but doesn’t keep footed on ten inch curves.Haven’t tried intermediate radiuses. The decoder isn’t impressive but get’s the job done, easy to reprogram too.A negative point…the factory installed coupler is a little low so it doesn’t stay gripped to just any car.Considering the low price…a nice low end unit.
