I’ve read many posts giving positive comments about the new Lionel 0-6-0 docksider swithchers. Does anyone have any feedback on the new 0-4-0 swithchers with slopeback tenders such as the #6-28678 DRG&W version?
I have the 1st. “new run” of this engine in Santa Fe livery. I did have to replace the can motor in it (about $12.00) after roughly 2 years of operation. It is a smooth runner, and has a whistle comparable to the docksider. I never pulled more than 6 cars with it, and it could handle more easily. Smoke output is pretty poor, though. At first the shell seemed to sit a little high over the wheels, but it looks fine to me now. For the discounted prices found on-line, I think it is worth it.
It’s hard not to resist Lionel’s A5 style 0-4-0 switcher with slope black tender. It’s a real classic and dates back to the prewar years when it sat on an 0-6-0 frame (203). It was carried into the postwar, MPC, Kughn, and present years as 0-4-0’s. As MP states, the can motor design is much smoother and quieter than past pullmores but you have to be careful not to overheat it. For ruggedness and value pricing, you might consider an MPC version with pullmore motor. They can be had on ebay for around 50 bucks in EX to LN condition. The drawback to the MPC design is the plastic tender trucks derail easily when backing cars into spurs. They don’t have smoke units either.
I have PRR version with no sound but it does have smoke. It does run well despite the plastic gears that wobble on their bearings. The frame is also thin compared with a PW 1665/1656. I was able to pick it up on the bay for 80 bucks. I don’t think they are worth anywhere near Lionel’s list though.
I am trying to cram TMCC and railsounds into the tender along with operating couplers on both ends. I think it will work. Stay tuned.
