Opinions on the MIdwest regional rail initiative and how it could affect Amtrak

I would like to know people’s thoughts on the Midwest regional rail initiative and how it could affect Amtrak. I live in Newton Iowa and I think the idea is pretty neat if it happens at all.

The corridor services already operated by Amtrak (Milwaukee in particular) already have a good ridership. If the program is funded (as it should be!), I’m sure it will take some people off the highways in proportion to the amount of time saved. I know of places I’d be very willing to ride it.

It could be another step in convincing the country that a well-built passenger service is worth building and supporting. The downside is that it will probably still “lose money”.

Dare we hope for an extension beyond Omaha to Lincoln, for those who would like to make the pilgrimage to visit the Mookie?

Amtrak may have to bid on the operation, but even if there is another operator, it would benefit Amtrak in the long run by expanding the overall passenger network. I hope the idea gets funded.

I apologize but this is the first I am hearing of this. Could you please provide a site that would allow me to read up on this.

Hope this works:
