If you have money to pay for that, you can order a locomotive in the way you want. Brazilian MRSL ordered GE a special model of dash 9 called C38MEi. This model was designed to run on mRSL lines here in my state and is a bit lower than the satndard dash 9. Also is less powerful, with just 3,800 HP, but is heavier than a dash 9, because the the company needs heavy locos to pull the 138 iron ore cars up hill.

Here it is a pair of them loading a train near here.

For price figure a DC drive model starts at about $1.3 million with $1.4 million as typically purchased. AC drive models cost about $2.1 million. The most expensive option is self-steering trucks.

Montana Rail Link’s new SD70ACe units cost 1.9 million each. They aren’t set up as Distributed Power Units (DP doesn’t make economic sense on the MRL). I believe no ACe locomotives have desk style controls. Not sure about Canadian Pacific GEVOs. Incidently, as it concerns EMD 6-axle locomotives, the steerable truck is the only option.

The foregoing provided a convenient excuse to avoid cleaning my apartment. Thanx to all.

Look at this article and this article from www.railroad.net describing options for diesel locomotives by J.D. Santucci. Very well written by an engineer currently working for Canadian National, has a bunch of other stories there as well.

Not so, CSX, BNSF, and KCS SD70ACes do NOT have HTCR radial trucks. So Far only UP’s SD70ACes have the radial trucks, as do NS’s SD70M-2s. I’m not sure about CN’s or FEC’s SD70M-2s.

There are typically hundreds of RR specific items specified in the contracts for new locomotives. Some are detailed as options in the builder’s specs but many are specified by the RR.

Here’s a partial list:

Cab signal equipment including location of equipment, displays and controls, cut-outs, seals, locks and keys.

Air brake model and schedule with RR particulars (such as power knock-out on trainline initiated emergency)

Cab seat manufacturer and model.

Main reservoir blowdown & air dryer make & model

Air compressor model and regulator settings

Horn model and location

Headlight and ditch light location

Alerter reset switch and location

Radio model and location

Engine cooling water drain valve made and model

Engine lube oil sampling valve type and location
