opto sensors

Basically, I have a 5 track hidden staging yard. I need something to detect a train at the end of the track to say “stop the train here”. I like the idea of opto sensors that control a light on my fascia panel. Are these reliable? My staging will be pretty dark and I’m not sure how well they work in dim or no light, but I guess I could always hook up a small light bulb to help. Anyway, what other hardware would I need to have these sensors light my fascia LEDs? Does anyone have any other alternatives to accompli***his same task?

Take a look at these Across The Track Infrared Detectors. I think one of these circuits should work for you.

I think a small wireless B/W video camera would be perfect not only could you see were to stop your trains you could also see problems like derailments or trains going on to the wrong track.
I only say B/W because it is cheaper but color would be very cool. also you don’t need wireless really, here is a link to one type of camera there are hundreds of others and I’m sure you could get some really cheap, hell even a used baby video monitor on e-bay for that matter.

I found this one on e-bay for $31.00 even has night vision.
