Hi all, we are heading down the Oregon Coast for Spring Break this coming Thursday for about 9 or 10 days from Langley, BC.
Just wondering if there was anything we should really hit and if there were any good MRR or hobby stores along the way. We will be coming back through Portland then Seattle along the I-5 on the way home.
One 15 year old and one 17 year old with us, both boys. Oh and an eight year old Yellow Lab. We will be RVing with our trailer so will be hitting campgrounds etc… each night, maybe staying in one spot for 2 or 3 days depending on how we feel when we get there.
Thanks much.
Dan
hmmmmmm, been down there multiple times didn’t find a hobby shop then again we were in the Gotcha shop towns like seaside and whatnot.

Have fun!
In Portland, check out The Whistle Stop Trains. Great store, lots of inventory and not out of the way for people passing through. If you are driving through the Columbia River Gorge, you’ll see lots of trains. Union Pacific on the Oregon side and BNSF on the Washington side. I don’t know your route, but if you’re taking i84 east through Pasco, Wa. You’ll turn off on i395 and go right by the BNSF rail yard. Lots of trains here connecting to western Washington and BC.
Sorry I misses the part about Portland to Seattle via I5. You want be traveling north east on i84!
I was in Bellingham,WA last year for work; there’s a great park on the coast, with a boardwalk paralleling the coast, with the BNSF mainline running along the coast. Nice park and if you can catch a train running through, you can get some pics (mostly coal drags and a couple Amtrak trains I think). The park is close to the Amtrak station and a nice little neighborhood with shops and food; I got a couple pics of trains running by there.
Google “railfanning around Bellingham” (or wherever you will be traveling through) and you might find some documentation on specific locations (TrainOrders.com, I think). I believe there is a pass through the mountains not too far away, don’t know how family friendly it is though (might be kind of boring for non-railfanners).
Burlington looked like a decent town to railfan, but I didn’t see much when I drove through there (I was losing light too so I didn’t spend a lot of time looking; but I had to drive through it because of it’s name).
