"Our" Place <est 12 Apr 2005> Adults talking Classic Trains!

Good evening Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Leon, a number 2 would be just fine! Add to that a cold Keith’s! Oh, a round for the house! Keep the change!

My Monday this week is gone, tomorrow is my Friday. And there are only 22 days until Our 3rd Annual Rendezvous!!! [yeah]

Tom – Railroad books are expensive. Hard to find any good ones for less than $35. [|(]

Computer problems are never fun.[:(!] That’s one of the advantages with Macintosh. Very few problems compared with Windows-based computers.[;)]

Wolfman has only one speed?[:O] I have to remember that. [;)]

I’ll give you one more day to think about my quiz question.

Very nice photos of the Can-Am Railway![yeah] I have to take more pictures next month! I am really looking forward to see the layout again and find details I haven’t seen before.[:)]

Emails received and responded to.

Mike – Thanks for most interesting photos of Hell Gate Bridge![tup] I’ve been crossing it quite a few times by train but it is hard to really understand the size of it when you are on top of it. [:)]

What year was that map printed, do you know?[?]

CM3 – I’ll remember your words of wisdom.[yeah] No laxative and sleeping pills at the same time.[oops] Makes sense to me.

Building bridges because of passenger traffic is one thing. Now the City of S

G’day Gents!

On this date in 1955, the Canadian Pacific Railway inaugurated their cross-Canada train called “The Canadian.” While that particular train has faded into history, VIA Rail runs its version called the “Canadian” over trackage owned by Canadian National Railway. Time permitting, I will run a feature or two on that most famous of Canadian passenger trains.

Here we are at the day before Friday - seems like a week of Mondays to Moi! Anyway, all’s ready, so fill up the coffee mugs - grab a pastry or two ‘n order a or breakfast! [yeah]

Cardinals squandered a 4 run lead against the Bucs of Pittsburgh . . . now they are beginning to look more 'n more like last year’s team.

Good Morning Barkeep and all present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox. Going to have some lovely weather here today with temps pushing into the 80s for the first time since last summer

Rob was here with comments and observations.

Nick - I can top your joke but we’d get “bombed off the air.” Eats, Shoots and Leaves resides in one of the bookcases in my office. It’s a good one.

Now I have an idea about railcars that you showed in your pictures.

Is that a PGE boxcar in front of the B&O cars?

20-point turns? We have them in front of the house every so often. About a year ago we had a monstrous 18-wheeler go over the side into my neighbor’s front yard. It almost wound up in their living room. They had to get one of those big wreckers) like they use on the Interstate around here to drag trucks out of ravines when they decide to go off on their own) to pull it up and get it back on the pavement. It took three pulls - each pull is a four-figure dollar amount - to accomplish the needful, and then he got the tractor stuck which took another two pull to get it unmired. The local gendarmes arrived, of course, and the driver was blaming everyone but himself. The more he complained the more the cop wrote. I know most of the people on the local force and he told me as he was sitting on our back porch to finish his report, “I hate trucks, I hate trucks, I hate trucks.” We won’t even get into how long it took to get the damage repaired. As mom said, “For once it wasn’t our wall.”

The real fun is when a Greyhound gets down in there - they can usually maneuver themselves out, but it can get interesting. I thought only Enterprise picked you up.

Then about two weeks ago we had another 18 wheeler up the other end of the block. He stopped b4 he got wedged in but the local police had to come an

Morning Ruth my dear, just a large thermos and what the heck for soemthing different just a abg of fresh donuts from the mosheen [tup] powdered suger please. What can I say dad was a cop so the apple does not fall far from the tree.[:D]

**Tom-**Ahh a good morning twofer of sirts [tup] Nice to read about The Canadain again. We still hope to do at least a partial next year ( time and circumstance permitting ) along with mom and pop for their 50th.

Glad to hear that the Gods of VIA were still empolyed and able to help out, looks like I have my return trip squared away [tup]

**Eric-**More CanAm shots [tup] I look forward to them.I haven’t a clue with the quizz both my guesses have been tried and shot down I shall await the the verdict as they say.

I’m guessing that the downtown lines that are going under are electrified [?] would make sence seeing as the “greeness” of the Swedish Govt.It always mystifies the wish to put the trains underground, always more expensive and it tends to always go over budget, as they always seem to run into some unknown ground water issue or some other difficulty.I know that Toronto wants to continue to build subway lines even though teh cost for the tunnels are 12B CDN and climbing as opposed to the 2B tag for a dedicated surface line system [banghead] I just know which option will be picked [sigh]

Neat cabooses , which museum [?]

**CM3-**Nice to see you pop in [tup] I’m guessing that most of the truck drivers that are hanging up in thh residential are"new" drivers either as in newly arrived or newly licenced. They tend to put those no truck signs up for a reason

Good afternoon gents. I see that Tom’s still pounding out the CPR pasenger train info so here’s a re-worked piece to add to the muddle.Leon I could use a Keith’s while I make sure this doesn’t wide page the ole thread.

CLASSIC DIESELS # 31 PASSENGER OPS OF THE CPR PT 1

Today the Canadian Pacific is a fright only railway, accept on the portions of the line that hosts VIA, GO Transit,Amtrak, and the odd private passenger run Rockey Mountaineer. The CPR has started running their own “cruise like” passenger service THE ROYAL CANADIAN PACIFIC ( on occation steam powered by Hudson 2816 ) but this is a rare milage extra ( with an extra high price )However during the CPR’s first 80 yeasr of existance, passenger service was a vital piece of their corporate existance, in fact they did become the world’s greatest transportation system with their operations of local, midrange, and transcontinenetal passenger trains married to Hotels, resorts, Steamships and an Airline ! At one point the CPR concidered their passenger service(s) an important cog in their corporate wheel.

A CPR Jubilee that is preserved at Exporail in Montreal, backbone of the early commuter services.

It’s most recognized passenger service was the transcontinentals and the hotels/ resorts that were built to be serviced by them, however beside giving the "gentry " Van Horne’s amazing scenery and hotels these train also served as the colinization route for the influx of settlers to the Western provinces of the Dominion, and thus helped grow the powerfull industrial base that the CPR thrives on in the west today. So here’s a few examples of CPR’s passemger services.

The first cross-country trains provided by the CPR came on line in 1886. These were

HI Tom and all.

A pint of Bathams please RUTH[tup].

TOM. Hope you are avoiding the heavy rain we have been having this morning[yeah].

Real glad you have got the Canadian trip sorted[tup] out after finding that ExpoRail would not have all the sheds open[tdn], I read that was sometimes the case from a letter in one of the British railway magazines I have. The more I think about it the more I realize how lucky we were on the day we were there, being Museum day opening early and able to see the great exhibits in Shed #5[tup]. I don’t think you would have liked to see a grown man cry if I could not have seen the A4 60010.[:)] Glad the VIA man you got the name of was able to fix you up with the trip to Gaspe[tup] I feel sure it will be all the way by train this time[yeah], as you say, good food, Budd cars and the Dome car it does indeed not get much better[^].

I don’t think my keyboard is quite ready for my two-finger typing just yet[:O] and the left hand is not behaving itself[sigh] so it has been relegated to just working the shift key as punishment[:)].

Yes talking to the outsource people can be bad for one health[banghead]. When my wireless connection was playing up with the intermittent fault I could not get any help[tdn]. Luckily the part we though that might be causing the problem was the cause, and the puter was back to normal after a replace part was fitted.

Great posts to celebrate what would have been the Canadian Pacific Canadian’s 53rd[bday][tup][tup][tup]</

Well then gentlemen, please excuse the lack the lack of any sort of responses- thursday night is band practice/therapy/kicking back with our buddies night (take your pick ) and tonight we didnt have a drummer so we assembled in our cottage instead-had guitars in 3 different tunings,a mandolin, numerous harps,my fretless bass, and Missisnick singing her heart out covering some complely improvised versions of songs from our set-has been an exceptional evening -the down side is that I am unable to make any useful contribution tonight ,other than to note that there are loads of points I want to respond to-Give me a day or two

BORIS is in charge of the galley tonight–looks like a quiet night,so lets`s give him a chance…He is eager to please-and lets be fair, that is rare enough in these latter days

O.K-have achieved critical mass/hit the wall-be happy & well,speak soon

G’day Gents!

Pleased to report that the Can-Am City Subway System is operational! All track has been permanently connected ‘n glued down onto roadbed which in turn was glued to the 3" foam insulation board forming the base. Exception - that portion at the station - still have to wire in a device that will automatically stop ‘n start the trains with a pre-set delay. Should be “cool”! Subway station nears completion - fotos taken of progress, but will be withheld ‘til June! Want the guys coming to Rendezvous III to get first crack at seeing ‘n operating it! [tup]

Thought I’d get a leg-up on the day’s activities . . . doesn’t hurt! [tup]

Hi Tom and all,

Leon, just popped in for a quick round of Tuis with all the guys, set em`up please.[yeah]

To all you guys. Managed to get on our nephews puter for a few minutes for a quick scan of all your great posts.[bow] Got a lot to catch up on when things get back to normal again.[:(] Thanks to you all for all the great info and pics, wish I could spend more time with you all at the bar.[banghead][:)][tup][tup][tup]

See ya, Allan

Good evening Captain Tom and Gentlemen!!

Yes, Leon, I am kind of late but I am raedy to have something to eat! I think it is a good evening for my favorite Rumpsteak Café de Paris! Yes, as usual!

I’ll start with providing the correct Quiz answer: The Disneland-Alweg monorail was designed/constructed by Alweg in Germany. Alweg was founded by Swedish industrial magnate Dr. Axel Lennart Wenner-Gren in January 1953, based in Fühlingen, Germany, near Cologne. The Alweg name is an acronym of Dr. Wenner-Gren’s name (Axel Lennart WEnner-Gren). More info on this link:

Tom – That is my point about taking more photos of the CanAm layout, there are so many details I missed last time and taking pictures from different angles. As you mentioned, there is a lot to view! [:)]

I actually had the location typed under my picture last night, but I must have missed to copy that line when I copied the rest of the text. Anyway, the picture was taken at Atchison Railway Museum, Atchison, KS. It shows Burlington Northern caboose #10410. Originally a CB&Q caboose. The museum plans to restore it to the CB&Q colors.

The Scenic Dome Route across Canada![tup] Hopefully I will win the Powerball jackpot soon…
The info on CPR is interesting even if the Canadian today is run by VIA. Too bad they changed the route to the CN route. But there are very beuatiful views in those photos and I guess they are all taken along the present CN route.[:)]

Good Morning Barkeep and All Present; coffee, please; round for the house and $ for the jukebox. ‘Nother lovely day here in the coalfields although we may get thunderstorms later on, but it’s nice now. Gas holding at $3.65.

Rob was by with comments and information.

Pete was by as well - Budd was pretty well covered up at that time, not that they were unhappy to get the order. Their plant and just about everything else is gone now. Enough to make you weep.

Nick was in - expect to hear from you once the sun gets to the west side of the building (lol).

Allan visted, too.

Eric - I couldn’t play the quiz because I had no idea - thanks for the information in the links.

$2.5 billion? Multiply that 5X and you’ll have a more accurate figure unless the engineers have some good ways of cost containment.

OSP - E-mails rec’d and responses sent. I watched the Cards and Pirates last night - good game for the Birds with some ferociously good infield play on both sides.

Canadian material is always good - lovely picture of the Budd diner, and I remember that flag very well. I enlarged the passenger pictures on the CanAm - nice! NMRA standards are like any other in that they apply to an ideal world. The donut machine is in trouble? Well, I’ll pass on the venison crullers but how about a dozen of the ‘possum glazed? As Granny once said, “He’s mine; I saw him first!”

Work safe

Hello Tom and all in

I’ll have apint and a round for the house please. Hope to be back soon with trip report - managed to get a seat inthe dining car both north and south bound - even thought he journey time is only about 1 hour 10 mins for 100 ish miles.

Hope everyone has a good weekend - soory about the brevity of this post!

Good afternoon Ruth,I hope that you got Boris to finish cleaning the donut mosheen, you should have seen the health dept. forms I had to fill out to get it recertified as being able to produce product fit for human consumption[|(] No No Boris , they are supposed to be Apple fritters not apple critters ( I see now where the cross contamination came from now [sigh] )

Well Ruth just a Keith’s I’m still coughing up hairballs from those donuts from yesterday.

**Tom-**Yes I got booked on the 3:40 back no ,connnection throught o Brantford but that’s fine that’s what Go transit is for. Still don’t know the train number ( without looking at the ticket [swg] ) BTW Molly has labeled me us non-reformable ( I used spell check and still managed to spell it wrong[:O] ) she just keeps me around because I’m such a sportman in the pudding pit [:-^]

I did see the flag thank-you I just didn’t comment as I was so roundly chastised for mentioning my feelings on it the last time[sigh]

Good to hear that the CanAm subway is 99% operational ( just don’t let Boris near the controls ) now when starting up the car do you first test the motor leads with your tongue[xx(] Don’t get me started on the cost overruns of anything public transit related [censored] I’m suure that we are of the same mind.

Hopefully those shots of Allan’s friends are not a time advanced photo of Cindy and the Ladies of perpetual motion[:O]

Hi Tom and all.

A pint of Bathams please RUTH[tup].

TOM. It was a great CPR ‘The Canadian’ train day yesterday with Rob’s post on the passenger operations on the CP and the different CP locomotive liveries on the Can-Am.[^][tup]

Good news the Can-Am Subway is in operation and the station nearing completion.[tup][bow]

Good and true words for Allan [tup][tup][tup]and may I join in a toast on ANZAC Day[tup]. There is a railway connection with ANZAC, as one of BR Standard Britannia class 4-6-2s was named ANZAC. Perhaps Allan saw this locomotive as it was allocated to Holyhead shed at the west end of the North Wales Coast Line and used to work the expresses along the coast line, like the Irish Mail. I think the Kinmel Park Camp, near Rhyl, where Allan was at is near the coast line.

As I say it seems as some museums don’t realize that a lot of people who travel a long distance to visit a railway museum are railfans, often knowing before hand what exhibits are there. To think that going to a museum and not be able to see a lot of interesting exhibits is sad[tdn]. I can fully understand if it is a workshop and for safety reasons it is not possible to let the public in, but cannot understand when it is just a shed when all it takes (as far as I can see) is unlocking the door and turning the lights on[%-)]. I would not mind if there were a small charge for a conducted tour of the sheds.

Remind me to tell you about a horse ride they was having at a preserved line next time we meet up.[:)]

Was that Temperance photo sponsored by the brewing industry[swg].

Got lotsa outdoor things done, like mowing the south forty <1/2 acre> with the push mower! Rains are due any moment . . . torrential so “they” say. Stand by the bilge pumps, boyz, we’ve sprung a leak! <what’s new?>

So, feeling a bit like a penny waiting for change, what better way to unwind than to mull through this day’s offerings at the bar [?] [tup]

For Rendezvous III Participants! Amtrak “Beagle” trip has been booked! Round trip at that . . . Cardinals day game on Thursday - Amtrak on Friday - Saturday at the St. Louis Museum of Transportation, are the featured events for this year’s gathering of the “Our” Place faithful! Good afternoon Leon , justa tankard of Keith’s if you don’t mind. Last stop before I’m off for the day ( working the late late shift day before my vacation[|(] arrrgh )

**Tom-**Ah yes people watching , should have at least an hour before my train departs ( as long as we don’t get snarled by frieght trains )I did enjoy the meatings with the livestock board,I only worried for a second when I saw Biff the head inspector reach into his briefcase,I caught sight of the shoulder length rubber gloves and almost passed out ,but he bypased them for a ballpoint pen[X-)][wow] another close call.

I have to say that when Pete and I were signed on she took measurements ofr those matching banana yellow speedos. luckily they didn’t find one in Boris’s size,so they allowed for a rule change for him to wear his favourite yellow loin cloth[:O]

I await the photo’s of the subway system once the rendezvous is over with [tup]I did thoroughly enjoy the CanAm photo run by’s of the various versions of the Canadian.

Yes one last surviving Great War Vet for us. there still is a push for a fullstate funeral if the family so wishes it. I saw an interview with him last eyar on TV he’s still quite spry for his at the time 107 yrs. He has a wicked sence of humour and was quite the good story teller.
