Here’s our trip on the Bernina Express in September. Breathtaking scenery, it exceeded all expectations.

I rode the line San Moritz - Tirano (Italy) in 1960 with two old wooden MU’s pulling a gon, a flat, and two tanks and a box. I think that was the consist, and maybe I’ll be able to find the slides andv post them and check my memory. Much of the time I was able to ride next to engineer, You did not photograph any of the street-running or the full-circle grade-reducing viaduct, and i may have photos of both. i was traveling from Paris to Tel Aviv by a routing only a railfan would choose. Overnight sleeper to Strassburg, ride on the one remaining tram line there and a tour of the countryside and churches with famous organs with a pupil of my Cambridge Mass friend Longee School professor Melville Smith who had graduated and was cathedral organist in Strassburg and who drove me across the border to Keil, Germasny. From there by train to Geneva, tram-rides on two lines, then to Lucern, another tram ride and a mountain cog, Then narrow-gauge to San Moritz. From Turano train to Milan, Tram rides and Opera there. (Most streetcars were like copies of Philadelphia Peter-Witts, but those on the line ot Monza looked like Boston Type-5s), then train to Rome, visit to the Vatican and Sistine Chapel, interurban to (?), circle tram-ride, and El Al Brittania Prop-Jet to Lod, now Ben Gurion. Again, hope to locate and scan the slides. Amused on Bernina to see freight transfered from the box to a horse-drawn wagon on the street in one of the towns.
Looks like the operation is quite differen today (going on 94 and was 28.)

Great stories you have ! I would love to have seen it in those years ! If you are able to scan some of your slides, would like to see. I did the best I could shooting pictures through tinted glass windows. We finally found a small window that opened near the WC. Another passenger and I were taking turns shooting out the
window…

Correction: Lucwen to St. Moritz meant leaving Lucern on standard gauge to the town at the south end of one of the major tunnels, Then ba steep cog narrow gauge to Andermat. Then a through Furka-Overalp Ry - Racian Ry train to St. Moritz. I think the interchange between Furka Overalp and Racian is at Dissentis with engine change. Furka overalp had red locos and Racian Green.

fascinating to have seen these trains in that era ! I have some G gauge models of Swiss trains, mostly bygone years.Things keep changing: Furka-Oberalp is now running under the name Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, and also includes the former Brig-Visp-Zermatt. The original Furka Pass has been tunneled under with a base level tunnel, although a steam train operates over the old Furka Pass in summer. Gotthard Pass has been tunneled under with a base level tunnel, but the old Gotthard is still in place, we rode it in September.
Bernina must have been fascinating in 1960. That is such a remote part of Switzerland to begin with. Much like the Rio Grande days when then Silverton was a mixed train…
