Over the track crane with clamshell??

Not sure if I have the clamshell correct. Any how, I need to scratchbuild an over the track crane to use in a scrap yard on my layout.

Does anyone know of any threads, web sites, or anyone who has done this?

Where can I get the parts to build it?

What can be used to make the crane cab move or swivel?

check the Walthers catalogue 2010 HO they have several in there.

Kibri 405-8510 $76

Faller 272-120162 $76

Faller 272120129 $19

You can get the parts in this kit: http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/cfn/cfn7000.htm

Yes, I saw those cranes. The Kibri is the closest one to what I am looking for but might be too large for my space. It is kind of imposing.

I guess I could use the photos as a model and build a smaller version.

Thanks.

Okay. That MOW crane is a great idea. Thanks.

Oops, I looked again and read the fine print. It says couplers and clamshell bucket not included. But for another $16.95 (taxes, tags, destination fee, and dealer added options not included), you can get the bucket from Walthers: http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/247-7282

If your talking scrap yard you may want to consider a magnet rather then a clam shell for your overhead crane. Magnets would be more efficient in picking up scrap and loading it in to gondola’s

Hi,

here is a crane that is DCC and made by ROCO. It is compatible with the Marklin system, but I am sure it can be converted to Digitrax or something similar. Maybe some of the modelers from Germany can give us some advice as well.

Also it comes with a clam shell bucket that operates properly and a magnet can also be added. Also Marklin makes cranes that operate and can have a bucket, or magnet attached. It is no longer available, but many of them can be purchased at train shows and ebay.

Hope this is of assistance.

I know of an “OO” scale over the track crane that might work for you. It was originally made by Airfix and is now made by Dapol, both model companies in England. I am right now building a through-girder turntable using the parts from a turntable kit that Dapol makes. Thanks!

I agree, either a magnet or an “orange peel”, but not a clamshell.

Okay. The Dapol crane looks great. I’ll have to adapt the hook to a clamshell or magnet but it appears this will work. Appreciate it.

Dapol had the kit in stock. Thanks for the tip. I just recieved it today. Now I just have to get it to the workbench to put it together. I saw this crane on two other club layouts. They look great.

Thanks again.

I appreciate this forum.
