Does anyone have experience replacing the motor in the old style Athearn P-42? What would be a good motor to use? Does the new style Athearn AC4400CW motor fit in the P-42 frame?

Yes. But the drivershafts are a bit different.
If I’m not mistaken, you’ll probably have to change out the flywheels, since the AC4400 uses the hex shaft drive. I think the P-42 uses the segmented slip-joint drive shaft.
Why not use an A-Line Mashima, (Walthers), can motor w/flywheels and motor mount? It’ll upgrade and quiet down the drive and it’s fairly easy to do. You might also want to change the wheels to nickle silver ones from NorthWestShortLine, (Walthers).
Shop around, you can probably find these things cheaper through an on-line store.
