I understand the build date on the side of rail cars. But what does P-U stand for?

Is that next to the weight data? Generally the P means it was painted and the U is a code that tells you where if you know what the codes mean. On the other hand, if it is a trash car, then it could just be a warning for the olfactory impaired to stay away.
It used to mean that something stunk!![:P]
