P1K vs P2K

There may have been a forum topic on this in the past but I don’t recall it. If someone can point me to it I’d be grateful. My question is:

What is the difference betwee P1K and P2K?

Any information or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Tom

In general, P2K has more detailing than P1k. However, with the recent P1K Alco releases (RS2 and RS11) this is hard to see - these have loads of detail added!

I have one P1000- RDC. It is a HEAVY, sweet running passenger unit. I’ve nicknamed it “The Brick!” The body detailing, along with the interior, is excellent IMHO.

I have a P2000 E6 A and B set on layaway; should be picking it up soon. If it runs as good as my “brick”, I’ll be very happy. Based on the thread I posted a while back on Proto E-units, all of the respondents indicated that I won’t be dissappointed.

So P1K, P2K? Both great values for the price! Some might disagree, but Proto has given Athearn “Serious” competition and Athearn’s production cutback on some of their models is an indication of this.

As I’ve stated before on another thread, this may sound “goofy” to some of you, but years back in the 70s and 80s, I used to wi***hat someone would produce well detailed plastic locomotives with “cab doors that could open” ! Apparently others had the same fantasy!

If someone back then would have stated that “LifeLike” is going to produce such an engine, he would have been laughed at and told to sit down before he hurt himself! Times have changed!!

P2k costs more than P1k??? That’s my guess/opinion.

P2K commands a premium over the less expensive P1K but as Antonio said
“both great values”

I got both, no disapointments.

Hey guys,

Don’t forget that several “reputable” internet dealers are selling P2K units for the same prices or just slightly above as Athearns at an LHS.

The P2K line came out several years before the P1K line.

Okay, so P2K came out several years ago and was one of the first of what we considder modern high end product lines. For a while their main competition was Bachman’s Spectrum line and brass. Over the next few years P2K had some really great models, my personal favorite is their SD9, and just about everyone else with the exception of Model Power, came out with a high-end line.

P1K started just a few years ago with their F3 release. The target market for P1K is about the same as the Athearn RTR and Walthers Trainline crowd. P1Ks have less added on parts but still basically the same P2K engineering. They are a great deal and I stock several of their RDCs.

I really can’t complain with either line, I do wi***hey’d make more modern power though lol

Detail, fragility and price. I am quite happy for my 6 and 4 year olds to handle my P1K F units, but little hands can easily damage the fine railings and grab handles on the P2K PA and E units I have.

I’m happy with my Proto purchases to date.
I have 2 RDC’s & several paper boxcars in my fleet.
I also have a CPR C-Liner & a D&H RS11 on layaway & both D&H PA’s on order with my LHS.
I just wi***hat they’d use KD’s instead of the crap they have on them now.

I think the only vendor out there that uses them is Intermountain.

Thanks, everyone! As ususal the group has come through with flying colors. I purchased several P2K’s and a P1K from a hobby shop that was going out of business. I have finally progressed to the point where I can seriously look at running them. I had the shells off and they looked pretty much the same inside. I’ve been out of the hobby for a while and am not used to the level of detail I found on them (see through steps and fan grates!).

Again, thanks everyone for the information.
