Hey, well, I have a P2K BL2 (The first run) and as we all know it has all old wiring, a old motor (not can, ha I can’t think of the name right now) a bunch of lead, and old blubs, I want to overhaul this engine and set it up for DCC as a project and donate it back to the club. It does not run even on DC. How do I do this do they sell any like project kits to do this, I want LED’s if possible and a Can motor what do I need to do, and has anyone done this? I am sure someone here has, Thanks a bunch, Mike
I looked on the bottom it isnt P2K it say AHM, so thats what I need to overhaul. Mike
AHM isn’t worth the cost of a decoder, so save yourself a lot of aggravation and throw it in the trash. Nothing will make it run well enough to justify trying to save it.
I agree I am just going to throw the shell on another frame, their frame and whole truck assembly is trash. Mike
That’s the same thing I do with old Tyco/Mantua shells that I like. With a little tinkering they fit well on some Athearn and Proto 2000 frames.
See the responses to your other, identical post in the general section. Throw out the AHM unit and search and find the P2K unit. The mechanism is better, the level of detail is better. The about time, effort and cost involved won’t be worth the outcome. By the time you add a new motor, drive train, led lighting, and the detail needed to bring it up to the P2K unit you’ll have more than the cost of the P2K unit. Add in a decoder and you’ve even worse off. If you want to learn how thigns work, then take the AHM unit apart like dissecting a bio class speciman and learn from it, but don’t waste your time. Additionally, if you’re thinking of ‘donating’ it back to a club your in, you want to make sure it is a good quality unit - good detail, runs smoothly - otherwise all your effort is likely to sit on a shelf and gather dust.
