cheap but for a reason, the BNSF GP38s don’t have silver trucks, they are green…

They are going for $59.99 at my LHS. I dont know if they have them in BNSF but they have Boston & Maine and D&H.

I’ve got 7 Proto GP38-2’s and they are very good running locomotives. The one’s I’ve got are 1 CP Rail, a Norfolk Southern, 2 Soo Line and 3 Ontario Northland.

Thanks but no thanks…I prefer Athearn’s GP38-2 or the new Atlas Trainman GP38-2s…Both the Athearn and Atlas GP38-2 on line discount price is cheaper then that P2K GP38-2.[:O][:)]

Well I have three of the P2K GP38-2s and I think they beat the Athearn and the Atlas Trainman hands down.

Bob,Thats good to know and glad you treasure your P2K GP38-2s…[:D]

I’ll still stick with the Atlas and Athearn GP38-2…At least I know the gears won’t crack on me like they did in my P2K GP7/9/30s…A 100% failure rate does not impress me.Now you know why I will never buy another P2K locomotive.[:D]

I have 4 P2k GP38’s, two CSX, one NS, and a Conrail, they have all been excellent locos and i do think they run alot better than the athearns and atlas models but i guess thats because i have not had the cracked gear issue. Im sure the other two brands are just as good but i prefer the P2k anyday. [:D]

The cracked gears are only in the older locomotives, and I have 3 of the early GP7s and 2 are just fine, other than being a alittle beat up, they still perform like they should. I own proto a Proto GP18(new run) GP38-2, 3 GP7s(old run, 1 with a cracked gear), 2 SD9s (both cracked gears Old Run) 2 SD45s, an S3 and 3 SD60s, all of them aside from the ones with cracked gears run great.

Jay,That’s excellent! You seem to be among the lucky ones…However…I had a total of 28 P2K Geeps…Every one of them suffered the crack gear problem…That was unacceptable then as it is now…I do like the detail and slow speed of the P2K engines.[:D]

To put this in prespective…28 P2K Geeps is around $1,250.00 at street price and I ended up with 100% gear failure…Savvy mate?

I have 2 P2K Gp38-2’s and I think that is all I am going to get. I like the bullet proof design and looks of the Atlas and Athearn.

I see the P2K GP38-2s on eBay routinely for as little as 49.95. Sometimes that’s a regular auction but they come up often enough that they’re not too hard to get. The GP38-2 has an entirely different mechanism than many of the other P2K GP designs. It’s more like a Kato or Atlas truck design, not the Athearn clone design used in most of the other P2K four axle engines. I think those are the ones that sometimes have the gear problem. I have several of the P2K GP38-2s and they run very nicely. I’m not saying they would never have a problem, but the gear and axle assembly is completely different from most other P2K engines.
