Has anyone tried installing a sound decoder in a Proto 2000 SD60M HO scale. I have 2 of these units and I am looking to put sound in them. Are they 2 or 4 stroke engines, and if they have the 2 stroke do you think the Digitrax SD38-2 sound decoder would work? Or does anyone have other suggestions?
An SD38-2 uses a non turbocharged 645 engine. An SD60M uses a turbocharged 710 engine. They sound completely different, but it’s up to you. Loksound may have what you’re looking for.
Be prepared to mill the lead weight to make room for a speaker. The P2K SD50s, SD60s and SD60Ms all are very tight inside the sheel due to the size of the weight. I started to put a Soundtraxx DSD-LL100/110/080LC for LLP2K -820071 in one of mine and have held off now because I can’t get the shell back on with the decoder and speaker. Others have milled the lead to make room.
