Hello Guys,

Hello Guys,

Looks great![tup]
Tell us more. DCC or sound? How’s it run?
I have a soft spot for the WP, since it’s a favored western connection.[:)]
Yes, very nice. What did you do for motor and gears, if anything? Many brass at one time looked beautiful but were not good runners. Fiber gears were and issue.

Good looking engine! What brand and specific colors did you use? That’s pretty much the effect I want to achieve on some engines I want to paint.
You did a fine job! Looks like a keeper.
Very nice.
VERY nice job! These were sister engines to the Rio Grande 700 series, and had almost identical lines. As to the model, since I have the Rio Grande model of this same loco, does yours have the motor connected directly to the geared driver via a brass worm (similar to a Bowser steamer, btw)? The reason I ask, is because if you are having trouble regulating the slow speed with the open-frame motor, you might consider replacing the magnet with stacked Rare Earth magnets. I did so on my 4-6-0 and it smoothed out the control remarkably well. I can crack the throttle on my power pack and the loco will creep around the layout now, instead of taking off like a racehorse.
But that’s a beautiful job. Congratulations!
Tom
Thanks for all the nice words guys. Sure, I will answer some of your questions.
It has the standard open frame DC motor, and no sound at the moment.
It is painted in Polly Scale Tarnished Black.
The motor is connected directly to the driver by a brass gear.
Nice job! I like the decal work.
I have just got one of these in tatty condition .Bought it as a non runner but a quick sort out of the tender trucks to their correct orientation and some old biro springs as replacement springs and it was up and running .It has a can motor but original gears .It will do for now but when I repaint properly I’ll install a NWSL or even a PSC gear box.Its not a bad runner .It has a large brass axle gear and runs better than I thought it ever would .The can motor sure helps it along .

Excellent work! The PFM imports are virtualy bullet proof, with only new magnets or a can motor to bring them up to modern standards. I have rarely seen or needed to replace a gear box, even on high milage models where the plating is totaly worn off the wheels. Most ran genuine Pittman motors which were a major step above the Asian knock off open frame motors. You can isolate both motor brushes if the amp draw is low enough and install a decoder. I only remotor when its the only option. Espicaly with what a good can motor goes for. I prefer Canon or Maxon motors, followed by whatever NWSL imports these days. Mikie
