Paint mixture

i know this might sound pretty dumb but i am about to paint a woodland scenics bldg and it says mix 2 parts grimy black, 7 parts alcohol and 2 parts dishwashing soap…my question is what i a part( an ounce etc…) thanks

whatever you want a “part” to be.

2 cups black, 7 cups alcohol, and 2 cups soap would be a valid mixture given the ratio they mentioned (granted it would be severely overkill).

you’ll probably be fine with a “part” being 1/4 ounce, maybe 1/2 ounce depending on how much you need to cover…

thank you …i think the 1/2 ounce mixture will work fine …

Dan is spot on but I have a question. What building is this? What is, “it says;” the actual instructions for the building? I’m asking because this sounds more like a wash than what you might use to, “paint,” the building. It also sounds unusual to have equal parts of paint and dishwashing soap, the question being, why the dishwashing soap when you’re already using so much alcohol, both of which are wetting agents? I’m not saying it’s wrong, just that I haven’t heard of mixing dishwashing soap, and so much, in a wash.

I agree about the dish detergent, that’s way overkill with wetting agents, leave out the detergent. This is what we call a wash, sounds like it’s intended to darken the motar lines around bricks. In general, the washes we use are 7 or 8 to 1 thinner to paint. The thinner can be water or alcohol (assuming we’re dealing with acrylic paints). Washes are built up in layers, i.e. brush it on, let dry, repeat until you have the desired effect.
