What’s the best paint scheme all-time. I say tie between the Southern Pacific Black Widow and Bloody Nose paint schemes.
Chicago & Northwestern “lighting” paint scheme on its wide nose locos. Simple but still pleasing to the eye.
NYC Lightning Stripe. Subdued yet elegant.
[Tie] Alton-GM&O red and maroon, and CGW red and maroon.
For me Simple the Red and Sliver Warbonnet and the Blue and Yellow Warbonnet.
The Erie two-tone green passenger colors, it looked great on E’s and PA’s.
Rock Island Red and Black, with the white stripes on the nose, from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Mostly done on their GP7s and a few RS3s.
Penn Central black with the noodle…EEEEEEEEKKKKKKK, must stay off drugs!
The B&O’s original Blue and Gray livery
I’ve always thought the Arkansas & Missouri had a really classy scheme. D&H Bluebonnets and the Reading Passenger scheme can’t be too far behind, though.
ZITO!!!
My vote is for the LS&I Red scheme of the mid eighties. 2501 never looked finer. The Green scheme was neat as well though.
Santa Fe WARBONNET!!! [:D]
#2 is the Daylight.
The SP Black Widow is definatly first Followd by the LV red and yellow scheme.
I totally agree.
#2 were the E7/E8A red and gold Frisco passenger units with the names of famous horses on the sides.
I liked the C&O’s combination of blue, yellow, and gray on passenger trains until I saw how D&H put the same colors together. And had C&O used gold or Dulux instead of yellow, it might have been even better!
A lot of our preferences have to do with the colors we like to begin with. I tend to favor the “cool” colors. Initially, I was blown away by the Erie Western’s paint scheme, but realized later that gray or black would have appealed to me more than white as a background color.
And BN was the best in an otherwise unremarkable era.
Someone mentioned the CNW wide-nose paint scheme. It was definitely classy, and put many other railroads’ paint jobs to shame at the time. But wouldn’t it have been sharp if they’d used the UP’s CNW Heritage paint scheme, minus the white striping?
Great Northern
When it comes to class I think it’s pretty hard to top the KCS passenger livery of the 1950’s and 60’s which is used on today’s KCS and KCSM business trains.

BNSF Heritage III is a great paint scheme no matter what anybody says! [bow]
It’s probably at a tie for best paint scheme with Kansas City Southern’s new Southern Belle.
Well…? [:-^]
I find this difficult to believe. The most popular and most modeled paint scheme of all times and no one has mentioned it yet. The Santa Fe War Bonnet!!!
