I’m thinking about a new paint scheme for my freelanced model railroad, the Oregon Midland (ORM). The new paint scheme will replace the blue, yellow, green and red I’ve been using sice 2006. I considered Navy Blue, with a gold stripe, but I’m pretty sure that at least 2 railroads have done that already. I’m more or less out of ideas. For the freelanced modelers out there, how did you come up with your paint scheme? Any suggestions?
I dont really freelance but this is one of my schemes that uses a yellow stripe.

I actually have always based my railroads’ paint schemes loosely on the old NJ-DOT (NJTransit now) scheme on the Big U34s. I tried a more original approach once, didn’t work out none too well. I really don’t paint too much equipment, it’s one of those “my railroad does a lot of leasing from others” deals. I have a few units done for effect, shows that I do run a separate railroad.
A lot of railroads started their schemes by applying their own colors to EMD factory catalog schemes.
This was the original Golden State Railroad paint scheme.
Since 2000 the new modern paint scheme is light blue body with a dark blue cab roof and the GSRR emblem on the sides.
Here’s a few thoughts on the subject from not too long ago. [swg]

How do you guys do those perfect paint scheme sketcches on th ecomputer, with all of the locomotive’s details. Is it a computer program?
No it’s not a computer program per say but it’s a computer drawing of which one source of the drawings can be found at,
I just download the line drawing and use “PaintShopPro” to color in the colors I want to use.
Great, now how do I post my drawing that I made on here, if I ever want to?
I use http://photobucket.com/
You just log on to the web site, setup a free account, up load you pictures to your new account. Then using the “IMG CODE” listed in the last box under the picture you want to post in the forums, make the “IMG CODE” the last line of your post. It works best if the “IMG CODE” is in a line by itself.
That obviously is a locomotive of your own making. Interesting model.
Yes it is based on the Frisco RS3 #451 rebuilt engine. It is an RS3 with an EMD 567 engine. They used a GP9 to house he engine and left the Alco nose and cab. I used an N scale Kato RS3 and an Atlas GP9 shell.
I am not a detail painter, so I looked for something simple. I wound up with D&H blue with a white decal stripe on the bottom and white lettering. Black chassis and handrails, yellow on the rails by any steps.
