The type of paint depends on the application. I use craft paints all the time on various applications and it works well, but really to give a straight answer a little more detail would be appreciated.

Try an auto parts store for spray cans of Red Auto Primer. It dries dead flat, looks like red brick, sticks to anything. It also makes a good boxcar red. Takes decals well.
Big John Dalton always spoke highly of craft store paints. Big John has passed away, but Ceramcoat was his his favorite brand. My Michaels craft store carries hobbycraft. The stuff works well, covers well, comes out flat. Also cheaper than model railroad paints.
I don’t remember a waterbased Floquil, all my Floquil paint is solvent based.
I use those cheap ceramic paints that come in a small plastic bottle that you can get from walmart in the craft center. There is a color called “Barn Red” that works very well for red brick.
Diddo. That paints good stuff for a small price and I use it for most of my scenery applications and stuff like that, stick with Floquil for weathering and detailing and painting train related things.

I have to agree with that Ceramcoat being MUCH better than the other craft paints. I just airbrushed my first building with that stuff tonight and it goes on a lot better than the Anitas or Apple Barrel brands.
