I’m contemplating purchasing a Wabash J-1 Pacific in brass, and I’d like to paint it in the Banner Blue scheme. I’ve painted and weathered several freight and yard engines with great success, but I’m a little hesitant about painting something like this. Pictures (and commensense) suggest that the passenger power would be much better kept, and therefore would exhibit less weathering. Can anyone give me any pointers? I’d think that some weathering would still show - light weathering on the running gear, for example, probably some pipe leakage and soot on the top of the locomotive. Any recommendations on how to make a colored passenger engine look appropriately used but still fit to pull the varnish?
I think you got a good grip on the idea already. A passenger power was usually kept pretty clean. I think your idea of what it should look like is spot on. I would paint it up all nice and shiney new and run it that way for awhile. Then, after awhile, maybe do a little weathering. I like the runnign gear. Happens alot, definatly if it was running in “wet country”. Either way, good luck to it[:D]
I am in the process of painting a brass engine for the first time. Maybe the links below will give you some pointers. Just replace the black with the colors of your choice.
