How do I paint a brick buiding with the mortar line. I’m working in HO.
I use the Lou Sassi method, and I like the results. First I paint the brick surface with a thin coat of red-oxide auto primer and let dry. Then I apply a wash of very dilute flat white latex house paint and let dry.
what ratio do You use to make the wash?
10 percent latex paint, 90 percent water, and a drop or two of liquid dishwashing liquid. Lay the building or walls on their side, and apply the wash with a soft brush.
I airbrush my basic brick coliur with Floquil & the brush paint the mortar colour with poly Scale & wipe it off with a damp cloth. This leaves the mortar in the cracks. UK GUY had a thread a while ago where he painted the brick & then sprinkled on flour, carefully wiped it off with his finger & then sprayed with Dull Cote. Sounds like a good idea to me. I will try it on the next buildimg I build. Hope this helps you.

I also spray the brick walls with a can of brick-colored paint…I use an inexpensive brand from Wal-Mart (about $1.00 a can). After it dries, I apply the mortar mix to the walls. For the mortar, I dilute joint compound (the stuff used for sheetrock) diluted real thin with water and add a couple of drops of dish detergent. To make the mortar a light gray color, I add a little Woodland Scenics pigment (Slate Gray item # C1219).
The reason I like the joint compound mixture is that it’s easy to wipe off the surface of the bricks and if I don’t like the result, it washes right off. And, leaving a little of the wash on the surface of the bricks creates a nice weathered look. I use a small piece of real sponge (the kind that comes from the sea) to wipe large surfaces and Q-tips for hard-to-reach tight places.
After I’ve completed all the walls and they have dried and I like the result, I usually apply an India ink wash over the walls, which tends to darken and blend the wall colors and trim nicely. I use about 10 drops of India ink in a pint of 70% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol. If I want a darker look…I just add another layer of India ink wash.
Hope this helps.

thanks guys. I used the 10% paint and it worked great.
Show us some photos of the results if you can.
